劉基《賣柑者言》 — the matched-shape inventory, frozen before the rendering
Enumerated under R40 §1, whose criteria were fixed in the regime file before this enumeration
began. Sentence numbers are ../copy-text-adopted.txt's.
The strength of this freeze, stated exactly. The regime's criteria were written first; this
inventory was committed to the repository before the rendering file existed. It is nevertheless a
weaker freeze than R39's: in the course of testing whether §1's criteria were applicable to
this text at all, the hand tried English at several loci. R39's inventory for the Arabic chapter
was frozen with no English attempted anywhere. That difference is declared here rather than
claimed away, and it is a limit on any claim this rendering supports about resource choice.
0. Two thresholds, declared here before the enumeration
- A member must be at least two characters. Single-character members inside a lexicalised
binome — 寒/暑, 口/鼻, 籩/豆, 賓/客, 孫/吳, 伊/皋 — are below the threshold and are not
loci in themselves. They remain available as matched positions inside a larger locus. Without
this threshold every antonymic compound in Classical Chinese is a matched-shape figure and the
class stops meaning anything, exactly as
R38declined «بعض … بعض» as a property of the construction rather than a choice made at that place. - A maximal uninterrupted series is one locus. Where three or four members stand in series and all of them satisfy (i)–(iii) together, the series is enumerated once, with its member count recorded — not as two or three overlapping two-member loci. A larger span whose only matched structure is the concatenation of admitted loci is not separately admitted.
1. The inventory — 12 loci
SHAPE-a = 對偶 proper, no character shared between members · SHAPE-b = 排比, a frame recurs.

1.1 The counts this inventory exists to produce
| count | per 100 source characters | |
|---|---|---|
| loci admitted | 12 | 3.85 |
| of which SHAPE-a (對偶 proper) | 6 | 1.92 |
| of which SHAPE-b (排比, framed) | 6 | 1.92 |
| members carried by the twelve loci | 30 |
These rates are not comparable with the Arabic chapter's. T-kalila-fanza-R39-v1 counts loci
per 100 words; this counts per 100 characters, the classical Chinese character being roughly a
word, and the two censuses use different source-side criteria because the two languages match by
different means. The number that is comparable across the two is the English one — which resource
(A)–(D) the hand used — because R40 imports R39's resource table verbatim.
2. The loci the rule declined, and why — R40 rule 1
| sent | the Chinese | why declined |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 善藏柑 / 涉寒暑不潰 | members of 3 and 5 characters — (i) fails |
| 1, 4, 6 | 寒/暑 · 口/鼻 · 籩/豆 · 賓/客 | single-character members inside lexicalised binomes — below §0's threshold |
| 3 | 置於市 / 賈十倍 / 人爭鬻之 | 3, 3 and 4 characters, and 置於市 is verb + preposition + noun against 賈十倍's noun + numeral + noun — (i) and (ii) both fail |
| 7 | 衒外 / 惑愚瞽 | 2 against 3 — (i) fails |
| 9 | 吾業是有年矣 / 吾賴是以食吾軀 | 6 against 7; the frame 吾…是… does recur, and the members it frames do not match — (i) fails |
| 13–14 | 孫、吳 / 伊、皋 | single-character members — below threshold; the matched position is carried inside M9 |
| 15 | 坐糜廩粟而不知恥 | 8 characters against M10's four members of 6 — (i) fails. The source breaks its own series here, and the break is the point of the sentence; the rendering must not repair it |
| 18 | 今子是之不察 / 而以察吾柑 | 察 recurs, and the constructions differ — (ii) fails. This is repetition, not matched shape |
| 20 | 東方生滑稽之流 | no second member |
One decline is worth naming twice. Sentence 15 sets four six-character members marching and then
puts an eight-character member at the end — 坐糜廩粟而不知恥, they sit consuming the granary's grain
and know no shame. Under R40 rule 4 the rendering may put no matched-shape figure outside the
inventory, so the English must break its measure at exactly that clause. A hand who tidied the
fifth member into the pattern would be improving the Chinese.
