Both are freely reachable, both are transcriptions rather than page images, and neither is a facsimile of a printed edition. That limit is stated here rather than buried: this collation establishes that two independent transcriptions differ, and does not establish which reading any particular printed edition carries.

The copy-text adopted, and why
W1 is adopted whole. Two reasons, neither of them a judgement of literary merit:
- It is the longer text at the only substantive point of difference. Where two transcriptions differ by the presence or absence of a 27-character stretch, adopting the longer gives a census more loci to be wrong about and gives a reader more to check. Adopting the shorter would silently remove sentences 3–5 from every count in this rendering.
- The rendering's questions do not turn on the variant readings. 托／拖, 糜／縻, 憤／忿,
嫉／疾 are graphic variants of the same words; 未嘗／未聞 and 默然無應／默默無以應 change nothing
the matched-shape census touches. None of the nine variants falls at a locus in the frozen
inventory, which is stated here so that it can be checked against
R40-v1/inventory-frozen.mdrather than believed.
What is not claimed. I cannot tell, from a transcription alone, whether W2's missing stretch reflects the edition it was transcribed from or is a loss in transcription. Both readings of that difference are live and this page does not choose between them.
