R39 — the matched shape, forced: no silent reduction on the one class the published hand never answers

v0.1, pilot. R38 is the handbook's own repaired rule executed as prose. R39 is R38 with one clause changed, and the change is aimed at a single measured fact.

A-knatchbull-kalila §3.1 and framework/v0.2 §7.18 report that the one published English hand translating Kalīla wa-Dimna from the Arabic answers 0 of 18 muwāzana loci — matched morphological pattern in matched position, the class his own 1818 preface calls the sententious brevity of the Arabic and says it was impossible to express … with strict fidelity.

R38 rule 3 lets a hand reproduce that zero without ever noticing it. It says: answer every locus, at the place it falls, in kind where English affords it and reduced where it does not. "Reduced where it does not" is a silent escape hatch, and matched morphology is exactly where an English hand will reach for it, because English has almost none of the derivational apparatus Arabic matches on. A regime that permits a silent reduction cannot tell the difference between English cannot do this and the translator did not try.

The rule

Rules 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 are R38's, unchanged. Rule 3 is replaced by 3 and 3a.

  1. Enumerate the source's sound figures once, under R38's repaired inventory rule, and freeze the inventory before any English is written.
  2. Render the sense. No fact, event, referent or evaluation added; nothing dropped.
  3. Answer every locus in the inventory, at the place it falls, in kind where English affords it and reduced where it does not.
  4. Put no sound device at any place outside the inventory.
  5. Record for every device the plain wording refused, at the same span, written at the same sitting as the device.
  6. Record every locus the rule declines and the ground on which it declines it.

3a — the added clause. At every locus whose grounds include SHAPE, the hand writes one of exactly two verdicts, at the same sitting as the rendering and before any comparator is opened:

There is no third verdict. A reduction is an IMPOSSIBLE, and it is written down as one.

What counts as matched shape in English, declared before the rendering

Arabic muwāzana matches derivational patterns (فَعِيل against فَعِيل, مُفْعِلة against مُفْعِلة). English has no comparable pattern inventory, so a rule that demanded pattern-for-pattern would be IMPOSSIBLE by definition and would measure nothing. This regime declares in advance the English resources it will count as the same kind of thing — form-matching between members in matched position:

resource example of the shape, not from this chapter
(A) matched derivational suffix on both members friendless and kinless · contrivance and connivance
(B) matched syllable-count and word-class on both members, with matched stress shape the lost, the last · neither warned nor mourned
(C) matched syntactic frame repeated with matched member length — article + adjective + noun against article + adjective + noun, of the same measure a hidden fault, a hollow praise
(D) matched inflection carrying the match — ‑ing against ‑ing, ‑ed against ‑ed — where both members are at member-end the taking and the keeping

Not counted as MATCHED: two members that merely mean parallel things; a doublet of synonyms with no shared form; alliteration alone; a rhyme alone (that is clause (i)'s business and is already counted as RHYME).

The declaration is made here, in advance, so that it cannot be adjusted after the census. It is deliberately generous — (B) and (C) are shape-matches an Arabic prosodist would not call muwāzana — because the generous direction is the one that makes IMPOSSIBLE harder to claim, and IMPOSSIBLE is the verdict the published hand's zero would predict.

What R39 is for, and what it is not

For: to put a number on the sentence a published translator wrote in 1818 and this project has so far only measured him against. Impossible to express the sententious brevity of the Arabic is a claim about English, and until some hand actually tries at every one of a chapter's matched-shape loci and writes down where it failed, the 0 of 18 is compatible with two very different readings — that the class cannot cross, and that no one has attempted it.

Not for: ornament. Rule 4 stands: no device anywhere outside the inventory. And nothing here is a quality claim — R39 produces a rendering and a table of verdicts, not a judgement that the rendering is good. The lead never judges its own translation (charter §5).

A known cost, declared in advance. Forcing a match at a locus where English does not want one buys the match with something: a longer phrase, a more Latinate word, a syntactic inversion. Rule 5 requires the refused plain wording at every device, so the price is visible at every site, and the rendering's log reports the total.
