R38 — the repaired inventory: one rule, the union, with the struck exclusion honoured
v0.1, pilot. R37 declared two rules for "the source's sound figures", enumerated a
chapter twice, and answered the union in order to measure how far apart the rules are.
RS-20260816h then found that the readers of the Arabic owe all 19 of the places in the union
and none of the 5 outside it, and framework/v0.2 §7.17 drew two instructions from that: strike
exclusion (a) of the project's standing inventory rule, and answer the union of a form rule and
a sound rule rather than either one.
R38 is those two instructions written as a single rule and executed as prose. It is the first
rendering this project has made under a rule the handbook recommends rather than under an arm of a
manipulation — and, unlike R30, R34 and R37, it is not an experimental pole.
The rule
- Enumerate the source's sound figures once, under the repaired rule below, and freeze the inventory before any English is written.
- Render the sense. No fact, event, referent or evaluation added; nothing dropped. Carried
from
R34rule 1,R36rule 2,R37rule 2. - Answer every locus in the inventory, at the place it falls, in kind where English affords it
and reduced where it does not.
R36rule 3. - Put no sound device at any place outside the inventory.
R36rule 4,R37rule 4. - Record for every device the plain wording refused, at the same span, written at the same sitting as the device.
- Record every locus the rule declines and the ground on which it declines it — the
near-misses.
R37did not do this andRS-20260816hneeded it: the places a rule refuses are half of what a rule is.
The repaired inventory rule, stated so a second hand can apply it
A locus is admitted if two or more adjacent cola or members show any of:
- (i) end-rhyme (saj'). The member-ends share the same rhyme consonant (rawī) and the same following ending. The rhyme may be produced by a rhyming word, by a verbal person-ending, or by an identical enclitic pronoun. Where the rhyme is carried by a suffix, the suffix is the rhyme unit and its own consonant is the rawī.
- (ii) muwāzana. The same morphological pattern in matched position, whether or not the members are member-final.
- (iii) repetition. The same content word repeated in matched position.
- (iv) ishtiqāq / jinās. The same root in two different derivational shapes, or two roots in near-identical consonantal shapes.
Excluded: the bare case-vowel (tanwīn) as the sole rhyme, where the rawī differs; the bare feminine ‑ah as the sole rhyme; anaphora of a function word; the narrative formula قال … قال; a recurrence spread across the whole chapter and not localisable.
Threshold for suffix-rhyme: three or more adjacent member-ends carrying the identical suffix, or two where the members also match in morphological pattern or in length.
A member's end is the last word of its colon, a colon being delimited by a coordinating conjunction, a pause mark, or the sentence end; in a bare doublet «X وY» the members are X and Y.
What the repair actually cost, stated here because the handbook does not say it
§7.17 struck exclusion (a) — rhyme produced solely by an identical enclitic pronoun is not admitted — on nine of nine bodies. Striking it is right and this regime honours it. But the strike leaves two holes that a hand has to fill before it can enumerate anything, and this page fills them by declaration, in advance, so that the filling is visible rather than absorbed:
- A threshold is now necessary and §7.17 does not supply one. ‑هُ is the commonest word-ending in Arabic prose. With exclusion (a) gone and no threshold, clause (i) fires at almost every pair of adjacent cola in the chapter, and an inventory that admits everything is the same instrument as one that admits nothing. The threshold above (three, or two with matched members) is this page's decision, not the handbook's, and it is the kind of decision exclusion (a) itself was.
- Taking the union does not only restore (a); it also kills (b). Rule A excluded the cognate figure — root echo between a verb and its object — as a separate class. Rule B has no such exclusion and its clause (iv) admits any root in two shapes. The union therefore admits «عَرَضَ لَهُ عَارِضُ سُوءٍ» and «أَذْنَبَ ذَنْبًا», which the standing rule excluded by name. Two exclusions fall, not one, and §7.17 names only the first.
Both are recorded on this page and in the rendering's log before the inventory was built, so that neither can be presented afterwards as a finding of the rendering.
What it is for
To make the handbook's own instruction executable, and to produce a chapter whose figure inventory was built under the repaired rule from the start — which no chapter of this work has, the four earlier ones having been enumerated under the rule §7.17 struck.
It is not an experimental pole and it is not a recommendation to ornament. Rule 4 is what keeps it honest: a hand that answers the union and invents nowhere is answering about one place in six more than a hand following the sound rule alone, and the census says where.
