R35 — members without sound (a decoy arm)
v0.1, pilot. RS-20260816 §9 left a post-hoc account on the table and called it post hoc:
what moves an English reader's belief that the original was doing something is the matched
structure, not the sound. Every affirmative judgement in that run was justified by its seats in
terms of parallelism — "parallel matched phrases", "matched word-shapes", "rhythmic parallel" —
and three loci moved the source-inference without being heard as conspicuous English sound at
all. R35 is the arm that tests it, by supplying one half of R34 and withholding the other.
The rule
- Add matched members at declared loci: a doubled colon, a matched pair, a triple on a repeated
frame — the structural shape
R34builds. - Add no sound-patterning whatever. Within a locus's members, no two may - begin with the same consonant sound, - rhyme, on their final stressed syllable or their final word, - repeat a lexical item or a stem, or - end in the same derivational suffix. This is checkable and it is checked mechanically by the design's cell builder, not asserted.
- Rule 1 of
R34binds unchanged: no fact, event, referent or evaluation added; nothing dropped. Added members may only restate. - Word cost is matched to
R34's at the same locus, within a declared tolerance, so that the two arms differ in sound and not in length.
What it is for
R34 gives members and sound. R35 gives members and no sound. The base gives neither. If
the source-inference rises under R35 as far as under R34, the sound a translator supplies is
carrying nothing that the members were not already carrying, and framework/v0.2 §7.12's item 3
stops being post hoc. If it does not rise, the structural account is wrong and the sound is doing
the work after all.
The design virtue that separates R35 from R32. R32's manipulation was a device the
translator judged to be a device, which is why "the lead's decoys were simply worse" survived as an
explanation of that run. R35's manipulation is the presence of matched members, which is
countable, and its negative half — no shared onset, no rhyme, no repeated stem, no shared suffix —
is machine-checkable. A reader who does not respond to it cannot be said to have been given a
weaker device; they were given the same structure without the sound.
Known limitations
- A decoy is a deliberately misleading text and is labelled as such wherever it appears; it is never presented as a rendering of the work.
- Syntactic parallelism in English drags function words with it (the … of …, the … of …). The negative rule bites on content words; the shared frame is the parallelism itself and cannot be removed without removing the manipulation. Stated here so it is not later discovered as a defect.
- "No sound-patterning" is a rule about the members, not about the sentence. Accidental consonance elsewhere in a locus is not controlled and is not claimed to be.
