T-ujpap-u2-R10p-v1 — Mikszáth, «Szent Péter esernyője» I.iii, unit U2, target P

Source. workshop/translations/uj-pap/source-u2.txt, 250 Hungarian words, PG #68911.

Regime. R10, target P = A-mansfield-garden-party, propositions M01–M11 of claims.json at 109b103. Opportunity list frozen at 8d065a0.

Position in the arm order: SECOND. T-ujpap-u2-R10c-v1 was written and committed at 8897fd0 before this rendering was begun. On unit U1 the positions are the other way round.

The carryover declaration. The C rendering of this unit was not reopened while this one was written, and it was written minutes earlier by the same agent, and the translator knew that arm-to-arm overlap is the study's dependent variable. Identical in kind to the declaration on T-ujpap-u1-R10c-v1, and identically unremovable. The lead's four renderings are a description; E-20260731h-carryover is the test.

Contamination: none. Same basis as the other three renderings of this work.

Judgment. The lead never judges its own translation (charter §5).

Translation

So he was in a very sorry, lean condition, was Vistula, when the new priest arrived and the sexton showed him over his new home — the four bare walls, the garden run wild with orache, the empty stable and the empty sties.

The poor young priest smiled.

"And is all this mine?"

"All of it, all of it, everything your reverence sees here. This dog into the bargain," said Peter Szlavik, with a certain relish.

"What dog is this?"

"Why, this is what the late reverend gentleman left behind him. He stayed on after his master. We'd have knocked the poor useless creature on the head long ago, only nobody dares, for they do say the old reverend may be looking down out of heaven and come back to haunt us for it."

The dog seemed to look up at the new priest gently, sorrowfully, almost with beseeching eyes. Perhaps it was the sight of the cassock that had brought him into so melancholy a humour.

"I shall keep him myself," said the young priest, and he bent down and patted the lean beast on the back. "At least there'll be some living creature about me."

"Ay, that'll be a good thing," the sexton humoured him — for it is a rare treat to a peasant to banter a priest. "A man must begin somewhere. It might be done the other way about: first get the thing worth guarding, and then the guard. But this way will do very well, your reverence."

He smiled — he could smile as winningly as a girl. He could see for himself that no great sphere of office awaited old Vistula: he would be a private gentleman in dog society, and nothing more.

Meanwhile more and more of them were gathering in the yard: young wives who watched from a distance and said, "Lord, how young he is, and a priest already." The men came right up to him and shook him by the hand.

"God bring you to us! You'll do well here."

Translator's log

Frozen before any evaluation of this translation was designed. Codes as elsewhere in this work.

# site what was live chosen code
1 Szóval "So" / "In short" / delete So + the appositive tag below A M10
2 opening clause "So it was in a very sorry condition" / "So he was in a very sorry, lean condition, was Vistula," the second A M05, M09 — the trailing appositive was Vistula is spoken syntax; it also repairs a referent the source leaves to the previous paragraph
3 czudar, sovány "in very bad shape, thin" / "in a very sorry, lean condition" the second A M08
4 labodával benőtt kertet "grown over with weeds" / "run wild with orache" run wild with orache A M08 — the specific weed is a period particular and is kept unglossed. The C rendering of this unit refused exactly this and the two arms diverge here by design
5 istállót és ólakat "the empty stable and pens" / "the empty stable and the empty sties" the second A M06 — the repeated empty is the immediate lexical repetition M06 wants, and it is not in the source
6 És ez mind az enyém? "And all this is mine?" / "And is all this mine?" And is all this mine? A M08 — inversion dates the question
7 Mind, mind "All of it" / "All of it, all of it" All of it, all of it A M06 — the source's own doubling, kept. The C rendering dropped it
8 amit itt lát "everything you see" / "everything your reverence sees here" the second A M08 — the honorific carries the formal address Hungarian marks grammatically
9 Még ez a kutya is "Even the dog" / "This dog into the bargain" This dog into the bargain A M05
10 mondá … némi kedélyességgel "said … with some enjoyment" / "said … with a certain relish" said Peter Szlavik, with a certain relish A M08, and the inverted attribution said Peter Szlavik is period order
11 Ez bizony "That one's" / "Why, this is" Why, this is A M05 — bizony becomes a discourse particle in English, not a word
12 agyon is akartuk volna ütni "killed" / "knocked on the head" knocked the poor useless creature on the head A M05, M08
13 senki se meri, mert azt mondják "nobody dares, because they say" / "only nobody dares, for they do say" the second A M05 — only for but, and the emphatic do say, are both period spoken forms
14 szinte könyörgő szemekkel "almost pleading" / "almost with beseeching eyes" the second A M08
15 látszott… nézni "looked up at" / "seemed to look up at" seemed to look up at A M01 — the hedge is the narrator declining to enter the dog, which is the free-indirect move the next sentence completes
16 Lehet, hogy… "Maybe it was…" / "Perhaps it was…" Perhaps it was the sight of the cassock that had brought him into so melancholy a humour. A M01, M08
17 Megtartom magamnak "I'll keep it" / "I shall keep him myself" I shall keep him myself A M08 — shall in the first person is the period form
18 the dog's pronoun "it" / "he" "he" throughout A M10 — a single narratorial voice that has already animated the dog cannot revert to it. The largest systematic divergence from the C arm of the same unit, decided as a target question
19 humorizált az egyházfi "the sexton said" / "the sexton humoured him" the sexton humoured him A M10, and X C08 does not govern here — the ornamental attributing verb is the source's own and the P target has no rule against it
20 the parenthesis (Mert nagy élvezet…) bracket / dash-clause / separate sentence dash-clause A M09 — the dash keeps it inside the sentence's drift, where a full stop would make it a maxim
21 Hát az bizony jó lesz "That'll do nicely" / "Ay, that'll be a good thing" Ay, that'll be a good thing A M05
22 Az embernek kezdeni kell valahol "You have to start somewhere" / "A man must begin somewhere" A man must begin somewhere A M08
23 tisztelendő úr (vocative) "Father" / "your reverence" your reverence A M08
24 rokonszenvesen… mint egy leány the C periphrasis / "as winningly as a girl" he could smile as winningly as a girl A M09 — set after a dash, against the short sentence before it
25 nem vár nagy hatáskör … magánzó "not much of a job … a private citizen" / "no great sphere of office … a private gentleman" the second, with and nothing more added A M08, M10 — the added tag is the narrator's own shrug and is not in the source. Recorded as an addition
26 menyecskék "young married women" / "young wives" young wives A M08
27 Istenem "God," / "Lord," Lord, A M08
28 Az isten hozta! "Welcome!" / "God bring you to us!" God bring you to us! A M08 — the calque is the period rendering and here it is wanted
29 contractions in narration install / withhold withheld in narration (we'd, that'll, there'll are all in speech) X M04 — the same refusal as decision 27 of the U1 P rendering, made for the same reason and recorded a second time so the pair is consistent

Codes: A 27 · X 2 · N 0 · 29 logged decisions.

Across the four renderings: 110 logged decisions — U1 P 28, U1 C 28, U2 C 25, U2 P 29.
