Position in the arm order: SECOND. T-ujpap-u1-R10p-v1 was written and committed at f5a5762 before this rendering was begun.

The carryover declaration, which is this artifact's whole reason for existing in this shape. The P rendering was not reopened while this one was written. It had nonetheless been written minutes earlier by the same agent and is in that agent's working memory, and no procedure available to the lead removes it. The translator also knew, while writing, that overlap between the two arms is the study's dependent variable. That knowledge can bias in either direction — toward divergence, by avoiding remembered wording, or toward convergence, by reusing solutions already found — and the translator cannot certify which. This is the confound E-20260731h-carryover exists to measure on subjects for whom the memoryless control is constructible, and it is why the lead's own pair is reported as a description and never as the test.

Contamination: none. Same basis as the P rendering: the published Worswick English of this chapter has never been opened, and the selection gate is deliberately not run in its selecting form per note (bel).

Judgment. The lead never judges its own translation (charter §5).

Translation

The new priest moved in. The people of Glogova brought him home on a single unpainted cart with two small cows harnessed to it, their horns bent outward. On the way the sexton, Peter Szlavik, milked the cows into a jug and offered some to him.

"The milk here is very good," he said. "Bimbo's especially. It's wonderful. Like some kind of ambrosia."

The new priest didn't own much. One unpainted wooden crate, a bundle of bedding, two walking sticks and a few pipe stems tied together with string.

In the villages along the way people kept needling the Glogovans.

"Couldn't you have put together a better rig than that for your priest?"

There's no denying it, the Glogovans were embarrassed, and rather than admit it they turned it on the young priest.

"It's fine. A calf could pull that much."

But if Janos Belyi brought nothing much to Glogova, he found nothing much there either. Only the parsonage, which was falling down. The previous priest's relatives had taken everything, and left a dog. It had been the dead priest's favorite. It looked like any other dog, in build and in coat, but its temperament had put it in a bad position, on its own: it was a thief where food was concerned, and around noon it went down the whole row of houses in order, looking into the kitchens, because its master used to get himself invited to a different farmer's house for dinner every day, and took the dog with him.

The dog's name was Vistula. It seems a long way to go for a river, when the Biela-Voda runs across the border right here. The dog was learning, painfully, that the two of them together had been worth more than one of them. Before this it had worked out, by dog logic, that the priest was eating the food that should have gone to it. True enough. But the priest was what supplied the standing. Now they chased Vistula out of the kitchens before it could get anything started, and some days they beat it.

Translator's log

Frozen before any evaluation of this translation was designed. Codes as in the P rendering.

# site what was live chosen code
1 Az uj tisztelendő úr "The new reverend" / "The new priest" The new priest A C02 — the honorific is period lexis and is dropped
2 fakó szekeren "drab cart" / "unpainted cart" / "plain cart" a single unpainted cart A C02, C05 — "drab" is not archaic but is a writer's word; "unpainted" is a fact about the cart
3 kajlaszarvú "crook-horned" / "with crooked horns" / "their horns bent outward" their horns bent outward A C11 — a named particular stated as a measurement of the thing, which is what C11 wants; "crook-horned" is a compound with a period feel
4 egyházfi "sexton" / "churchwarden" / "the man who looked after the church" sexton X C02 — "sexton" is period lexis in contemporary English and was kept anyway, because the periphrasis is a gloss and C12 forbids glossing. The two propositions conflict at this site and C12 won
5 mondá "said he" / "he said" he said A C08
6 Az fölséges, mintha valami almázia volna "That's a lordly drop" / "It's wonderful. Like some kind of ambrosia." the second, split into two sentences A C03, C17 — the peasant tag is era-marking slang; splitting installs the unpatterned sentence-length variation
7 Az uj pap holmija kevésből állott "did not amount to much" / "didn't own much" didn't own much A C16 — contraction in exposition, which is the proposition's explicit demand
8 the inventory keep as one sentence with a colon / break into two sentences broken into two, the second a bare list A C13, C17
9 kötekedtek "kept at" / "kept chaffing" / "kept needling" kept needling A C03 — "kept at" and "chaffing" are both datable; "needling" is not
10 a glogovaiakkal "the Glogova people" / "the Glogovans" the Glogovans A C11 — the demonym is the named particular, undecorated
11 Hát nem tudtak kendtek… "Couldn't you good folk…" / "Couldn't you…" Couldn't you… A C03, C04 — kendtek has no contemporary English; installing a rustic address form would be era-marking, and eye-dialect is forbidden outright
12 fogat "turnout" / "rig" / "team" rig A C02
13 Mi tűrés-tagadás "There's no denying it" / delete / "It has to be said" There's no denying it X C18 — this is a narratorial idiolect and C18 asks for a presence with none. It was kept because deleting it removes the narrator from a sentence the source builds around him. The clearest failure of the C target in this rendering, and it is a failure of the catalogue against this source rather than an oversight
14 Ej no! Elég jó az. "Eh, come! It's good enough." / "It's fine." It's fine. A C03, C19 — the interjection is both era-marking and sound play
15 bizony… elhúzná "could pull that lot, and no mistake" / "could pull that much" A calf could pull that much. A C03. üszőbornyú ("heifer calf") reduced to "calf": X C11, recorded, since the precise animal is a named particular and precision was traded for plainness
16 ¶7, the 91-word sentence keep as one long period / break into short sentences plus one long one broken into four, the last one long A C13, C17 — C17 wants wide unpatterned variation, and a single long period is a pattern of one
17 düledező parókiát "the tumbledown parsonage" / "the parsonage, which was falling down" the second A C01, C02 — "tumbledown" is a period compound
18 minden holmit elvittek "carried off every stick" / "had taken everything" had taken everything A C03
19 népszerűtlen, külön állást kezdett elfoglalni "had begun to occupy a certain unpopular and separate station" / "had put it in a bad position, on its own" the second A C05 — the mock-officialese is exactly the Latinate display C05 forbids, and dropping it costs the joke. Recorded as a cost, not as a gain
20 pákosztaságából kifolyólag "being a thieving creature about food" / "it was a thief where food was concerned" the second A C05
21 the Visztula parenthesis dash-clause / bracket / its own sentence its own sentence A C19 — brackets and dashes are typographic devices; a sentence is not
22 keservesen "and bitterly" / "painfully" painfully A C05, C17
23 kutyafilozófiával "out of dog-philosophy" / "by dog logic" by dog logic A C05
24 Úgy ám, de ő adta a tekintélyt és befolyást! one exclamatory sentence / "True enough. But the priest was what supplied the standing." the second, and the exclamation mark removed A C06, C13, C19 — the free indirect judgment is kept inside the narrator's grammar and the exclamation, which advertises the manoeuvre, is not
25 tekintélyt és befolyást "the standing and the influence" / "the standing" the standing A C10 — the doublet is ornament
26 el is páholták néha napján "gave him a thrashing besides" / "some days they beat it" some days they beat it A C03
27 the dog's pronoun "he" throughout / "it" throughout "it" throughout A C05, C18 — "he" for the dog is the narrator taking a position, and the P rendering took it. Recorded because it is the single largest systematic divergence between the two arms and it was decided as a target question, not as a difference-maker
28 favourite / favorite British / American orthography favorite A C02 — A-mchugh-presence is American contemporary prose. The P rendering uses British forms throughout, per A-mansfield-garden-party
