T-ujpap-u2-R10c-v1 — Mikszáth, «Szent Péter esernyője» I.iii, unit U2, target C
Source. workshop/translations/uj-pap/source-u2.txt, Part I ch. III paragraphs 10–21, 250 Hungarian words, PG #68911.
Regime. R10, target C = A-mchugh-presence, propositions C01–C19 of claims.json at 109b103. Opportunity list frozen at 8d065a0.
Position in the arm order: FIRST. On unit U1 the centre arm was written second; here it is written first. The reversal is the design and it is within one work, one session and one translator, which is what S074 and S075 could not do because each held only one unit (wiki/backlog.md, the S075 row).
The confound this pair still carries, stated rather than defended. U1 and U2 are different source material — U1 is narration, U2 is more than half dialogue — so unit and arm-position are perfectly confounded in the lead's own four renderings. The lead limb is therefore a description with n = 1 per cell and is never this session's test. The test is E-20260731h-carryover, where three panel seats render the same unit under both orders and under neither.
Contamination: none. Worswick 1900 has not been opened for this chapter; the selection gate is deliberately not run in its selecting form, per note (bel). See u1-R10p-v1/translation.md for the full basis.
Judgment. The lead never judges its own translation (charter §5).
Translation
So it was in very bad shape, thin, when the new priest arrived and the sexton showed him around his new home: the four bare walls, the garden grown over with weeds, the empty stable and pens.
The poor young priest smiled.
"And all this is mine?"
"All of it, everything you see. Even the dog," Peter Szlavik said, with some enjoyment.
"What dog is that?"
"That one's part of the late priest's estate. It stayed on after him. We'd have killed the poor useless thing by now, but nobody dares, because they say the old priest might be watching from up there and come back to haunt us over it."
The dog looked up at the new priest, mild and sad, almost pleading. Maybe it was the sight of the cassock that put it in that mood.
"I'll keep it," the priest said, and he bent down and patted the thin animal's back. "At least there'll be something alive near me."
"That'll do nicely," the sexton said. He was enjoying himself; it's a real pleasure for a peasant to tease a priest. "You have to start somewhere. You could do it the other way around, get the thing worth guarding first and then the guard. But this way is fine too, Father."
He smiled. He could smile in a way that made you like him, like a girl. He could see for himself that there wasn't going to be much of a job for old Vistula, that he'd be a private citizen in dog society.
Meanwhile more and more people were gathering in the yard. Young married women watched from a distance and said, "God, he's so young, and a priest already." The men came right up and shook his hand.
"Welcome! You'll do well here."

Translator's log
Frozen before any evaluation of this translation was designed. Codes as elsewhere in this work.
| # | site | what was live | chosen | code |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | czudar, sovány állapotban volt | "in a sorry, lean condition" / "in very bad shape, thin" | in very bad shape, thin | A C02, C03 — "sorry" and "lean" in this collocation are both period |
| 2 | labodával benőtt kertet | "the garden run wild with orache" / "the garden grown over with weeds" | grown over with weeds | X C11, C12 — laboda is orache, a named particular, and naming it is what C11 asks for; it was refused because "orache" is a word most contemporary readers must look up, and C12 forbids the gloss that would follow. The proposition pair forces a choice here and precision lost |
| 3 | istállót és ólakat | "the stable and the sties" / "the empty stable and pens" | the empty stable and pens | A C02 — "sties" is not archaic but is farm lexis of a period kind |
| 4 | És ez mind az enyém? | "And is all this mine?" / "And all this is mine?" | And all this is mine? | A C01 — the inverted interrogative is the archaic form |
| 5 | Mind, mind, amit itt lát | "All of it, all of it, everything your reverence sees" / "All of it, everything you see" | the second | X C-none; the doubling Mind, mind is in the source and was dropped as ornament under C10's spirit. Recorded as a loss: the repetition is characterisation, not decoration |
| 6 | lát (formal address) | "your reverence sees" / "you see" | you see | A C02 — Hungarian's formal third-person address has no contemporary English equivalent that is not period-marked |
| 7 | mondá … némi kedélyességgel | "said … with a certain relish" / "said … with some enjoyment" | said … with some enjoyment | A C08, C05 |
| 8 | Ez bizony a megboldogult tisztelendő hagyatéka | "this is what the late reverend gentleman left behind him" / "That one's part of the late priest's estate" | the second | A C01, C02, C16 |
| 9 | agyon is akartuk volna ütni | "knocked on the head" / "killed" | killed | A C03 — "knock on the head" is era-marking idiom |
| 10 | alkalmatlan párát | "the poor useless creature" / "the poor useless thing" | the poor useless thing | A C02 — pára is an affectionate rustic word for a beast; "creature" in this slot is period |
| 11 | hátha az égből nézi | "may be looking down out of heaven" / "might be watching from up there" | might be watching from up there | A C02, C05 |
| 12 | szelíden, szomorúan, szinte könyörgő szemekkel látszott… nézni | "seemed to look up… gently, sorrowfully, almost with beseeching eyes" / "looked up…, mild and sad, almost pleading" | the second | A C01, C05 — the triple adverb and beseeching are both period; látszott nézni ("seemed to look") is dropped, and that is a small loss of the narrator's hedge |
| 13 | reverenda | "cassock" / "priest's robe" | cassock | A C12 — kept unglossed |
| 14 | melankolikus hangulatba | "into so melancholy a humour" / "in that mood" | in that mood | A C05 |
| 15 | the dog's pronoun | "he" / "it" | "it" for the dog until the churchwarden's speech, "he" once inside the priest's own view | X C07 — one consciousness is impossible here (opportunity.md), and the pronoun shift marks whose view is in force. The shift is deliberate and is a departure from the flat policy the U1 C rendering used |
| 16 | humorizált az egyházfi | "the sexton humoured him" / "the sexton said" | the sexton said | A C08 — humorizált is precisely the ornamental attributing verb C08 forbids |
| 17 | the parenthesis (Mert nagy élvezet…) | keep as a bracket / promote to a dash / make it a clause of narration | a clause of narration, semicolon-joined | A C19 — brackets are a typographic device |
| 18 | nagy élvezet parasztnak pappal évelődni | "a rare treat to a peasant to banter a priest" / "a real pleasure for a peasant to tease a priest" | the second | A C03 |
| 19 | tisztelendő úr (vocative) | "your reverence" / "Father" | Father | A C02 |
| 20 | olyan rokonszenvesen tudott mosolyogni, mint egy leány | "he could smile as winningly as a girl" / "He could smile in a way that made you like him, like a girl." | the second | A C05 — "winningly" is display vocabulary; the periphrasis costs compactness and is recorded as a cost |
| 21 | nem vár nagy hatáskör | "no great sphere of office awaited him" / "there wasn't going to be much of a job for him" | the second | A C05, C16 |
| 22 | valóságos magánzó lesz a kutyatársadalomban | "a private gentleman in dog society" / "a private citizen in dog society" | a private citizen in dog society | A C02 — "private gentleman" is the accurate sense of magánzó and is period lexis; "private citizen" is the contemporary word and loses the class joke |
| 23 | menyecskék | "young wives" / "young married women" | young married women | A C02, C12 — the term is a specific rural category and is neither glossed nor modernised away |
| 24 | «Istenem, milyen fiatal és már pap» | "Lord, how young he is, and a priest already" / "God, he's so young, and a priest already" | the second, guillemets → double quotes | A C16, C19 |
| 25 | Az isten hozta! | "God bring you to us!" / "Welcome!" | Welcome! | A C01 — the literal is a calque and reads as archaism in English |
Codes: A 22 · X 3 · N 0 · 25 logged decisions. All three X codes (2, 5, 15) are refusals of the C target; two of them (2, 15) are sites where two C propositions conflict, which is the same shape the U1 C rendering found.
