R46 — answer by sound, and declare whether the eye was also served

v0.1, pilot. R46 is R44 and R45 with one field added and one prohibition made explicit. It exists because framework/v0.2 §7.26 item 5 leaves a practitioner unable to tell whether the chime he has written works on the ear, on the page, or on both — and because nobody has ever counted which kind a translator's hand actually produces.

The rule

  1. Take the frozen locus inventory as given (workshop/translations/gulistan-bab1d/loci-frozen.md): twelve SAJ, twenty-two VERSE, eight CONTROL. The hand does not add loci and does not drop them.
  2. Render the sense. No fact, event, referent or evaluation added; nothing dropped. This clause outranks everything below: a chime bought by changing what the sentence says is a violation, not a compensation. A colon may be split or joined; a colon may not be invented.
  3. Answer by sound, or refuse. At each SAJ and VERSE locus the hand tries for an English pair at the two phrase-ends that rhymes in pronunciation. R45's three moves are available — REORDER, RESELECT, RESPLIT — and each is named where used.
  4. An eye-chime does not satisfy this rule and may not be written for its own sake. A pair that shares its final letters but not its final sounds — sword / word, love / move, though / rough — is not an answer under R46. The hand may not reach for one. If the sound is unreachable the locus is a refusal and is logged as one, exactly as under R45.
  5. The new field: EYE. At every locus, whatever the outcome, the hand records in one word whether the pair it wrote (or, at a refusal, the plain pair it left) is also alike in spelling at the rime, and — at every refusal — whether an eye-only chime was available and was passed over, naming the pair.
  6. Price every chime. As under R45: what the move cost in sense, in one line. A locus where a rhyme was reachable and was declined on fidelity grounds is logged REFUSED with the pair named and the reason given. RS-20260823c established that a log with no category for I could have and did not over-reports success by a factor of two.
  7. CONTROL loci are translated with no attention to sound at all, and are then scored by the same mechanical rule. They are the floor for every hand-level figure.

What the regime is for, and what it is not

The classification in clause 5 is descriptive and mechanical, adjudicated after the log freezes by tools/rhyme_pairs.py and a spelling rule declared in the study's design — never by the hand's ear. RS-20260823c §2 recorded four pairs this project's lead heard as rhymes and its own rule rejects; the hand's ear is a datum, not an adjudicator.

R46 measures a hand, not a reader. Whether an eye-chime is worth anything to anyone is not a question a translator can settle by translating, and this regime does not pretend to settle it. It supplies the other half: how often the question even arises — how often the sounded chime a translator writes is also a spelled chime, and how often, where the sound fails, the spelling was lying there to be taken.
