R41 — the synonym enumeration, forced: the handbook's newest positive instruction executed as prose

v0.1, pilot. framework/v0.2 §7.24 item 2 is the handbook's newest positive instruction about sound, and it was published without a test:

at a locus where the source rhymes, do not ask whether the first English word chimes; enumerate the ordinary synonyms for each member and look for a pair that does. The available rhymes live there.

R41 is that sentence turned into a rule a hand can be held to. It stands to §7.24 as R39 stands to §7.18: the point of the regime is that it makes the refusals visible, so that a hand cannot reproduce a zero without noticing.

The rule

  1. Take the frozen locus inventory as given. The rhymed loci are enumerated from the source and committed before any English is written (workshop/translations/gulistan/loci-frozen.md). The hand does not add loci and does not drop them.
  2. Render the sense. No fact, event, referent or evaluation added; nothing dropped. This clause outranks 3 and 4: a chime bought by changing what the sentence says is a violation, not a compensation.
  3. At every locus, enumerate before choosing. Before writing the English for that span, write down for each member the ordinary English renderings the hand would accept — a list, not a word. Then look across the lists for a pair that chimes.
  4. Record one of exactly three verdicts at every locus, at the same sitting as the rendering and before any comparator is opened: - CHIMED — the rendering carries an echo between the members, with the chosen pair quoted and the position of each member given. Mark FREE if the first and most ordinary English word for each member already chimed, and FOUND if the chime came from further down a list. The FREE/FOUND distinction is the whole point of the instruction and a log that does not make it flatters itself (framework/v0.2 §7.22 item 3, same failure mode). - AVAILABLE-REFUSED — a chiming pair was in the lists and was not used, with the pair quoted and the ground given. The ground is normally rule 2: the chiming synonym does not say what the Persian says here, or its register is wrong for the sentence. - NONE — no pair in the lists chimed.
  5. Put no chime at any place outside the inventory. Where the hand finds itself writing an echo at a span the source left plain, it strikes it and records the strike. Under §7.14 and §7.20 an invented figure is a defect and not a bonus, and a regime that measures yield must not let the hand manufacture the numerator.
  6. The lists are written down and kept. They are the artifact R41 exists to produce. A verdict without its lists is unauditable, because the whole claim under test is about what the lists contain.

What R41 does not do

It does not tell the hand to prefer a chime, and it does not weigh a chime against anything. It forces the enumeration and forces the record. Whether the enumeration is worth a translator's time is exactly what the arm measures, and a regime that leaned on the answer would prejudge it.

Verse

Verse is out of scope for R41 and is marked in place. Sa'di's couplets carry their own end-rhyme and are a different problem from saj'.
