Canon — И. С. Тургенев, «Свидание» (1850), complete
Work. «Свидание», from Записки охотника. First published in Современник vol. XXIV no. 11 (1850), pp. 114–122. Public domain (Turgenev d. 1883).
Why the whole sketch and not a passage. workshop/translations/svidanie/R04-v1/ holds the first paragraph only, established at S026 for a different purpose. E-20260730g measures a punctuation-preservation rule across a whole translation, so the whole source is needed and the paragraph structure has to be established, not just the words.
Witnesses
| id | source | retrieved | note |
|---|---|---|---|
| WS | ru.wikisource.org/wiki/Свидание_(Тургенев), raw wikitext |
2026-07-30 | declares its own source as ilibrary.ru/text/1204/p.19 |
| AZ | az.lib.ru/t/turgenew_i_s/text_0080.shtml (Moshkov, cp1251) |
2026-07-30 | the whole Записки охотника; «Свидание» extracted by opening and closing strings |
Both witnesses give 69 paragraphs in the same order. AZ writes the em dash as -- and the ellipsis as ...; those are transcription conventions, normalised before comparison and not counted as variants.
Established text
WS is the base. AZ is adopted only where WS is demonstrably corrupt — a non-word or a Latin character in Cyrillic text. Two such sites:
| ¶ | WS | adopted | basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | «или, когда, ж ясный ветреный день, она вея шумно струится» | «или, когда в ясный ветреный день, она вся шумно струится» | three corruptions in one clause — a stray comma, ж for в, вея for вся. AZ reads correctly. The same three were found and corrected at S026 on the paragraph stored under workshop/translations/svidanie/R04-v1/, from the same two witnesses; the wikisource text has not been repaired in the four sessions since |
| 59 | «заикаясь и e два осмеливаясь» | «заикаясь и едва осмеливаясь» | Latin e for Cyrillic ед-; AZ reads едва |
Everywhere else WS stands, including where AZ is arguably better, because a base-plus-demonstrable-corruption rule is checkable and a reading-by-reading preference is not.

The variant register, and why this manifest has one
E-20260730g's primary statistic is a count of commas and sentence-final marks. A witness disagreement about a comma is therefore not a footnote — it is measurement noise in the study's own instrument, and it has to be quantified before the study reads anything off the numbers.
Eighteen sites disagree after typographic normalisation. Six of them are punctuation:
| ¶ | WS | AZ |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | «или, когда, ж ясный…» (the stray comma, emended) | «или, когда в ясный…» |
| 21 | «хороша в это мгновение: вся душа» | «…мгновение; вся душа» |
| 22 | «спросила, наконец, изумленная Акулина» | «спросила наконец изумленная Акулина» |
| 37 | «а в деревне зимой ты сама знаешь» | «а в деревне зимой — ты сама знаешь —» |
| 49 | «вам грешно… вам грешно» | «вам грешно, вам грешно» |
| 67 | «тяжело и резко рассекая воздух крылами» | «…крылами,» |
Whole-work totals: WS 399 commas / 202 sentence-enders; AZ 398 / 201. Aggregate disagreement 5 commas (1.25%) and 1 sentence-ender (0.5%) — because two of the six sites cancel in the totals. The established text reads 398 commas and 202 sentence-enders after the P0 emendation.
This is the noise floor for the study's statistic and it is stated in advance rather than discovered afterwards. Any comparison the experiment makes must clear it, and a per-paragraph result at one of the six sites above is void.
One limitation neither witness can repair. Both are modern editions. Futabatei translated in 1888 from a nineteenth-century Russian printing whose pointing is not necessarily either of these. The noise floor measured here bounds disagreement between two twenty-first-century transcriptions of one twentieth-century academic text; it does not bound the distance from what Futabatei had in front of him. The study's own bearing on this is in E-20260730g §Limitations.
