Source manifest — «La Mort de Pan», the Thamus passage and the road to San-Pansi

Not a canon member. A source text fetched for one unit (E-20260802c-regime-scoring, S089) and frozen before a word of it was translated. Recorded with the provenance discipline canon members get.

Contamination axis — why this work, and it is an absence rather than a number

No English rendering of any work by Paul Arène was found. Project Gutenberg's author search returns six Arène volumes, all French; the Internet Archive's creator:"Arène, Paul" returns 16 records, fifteen French and one German. There is therefore no published English of this text for the lead to have remembered, and no comparator against which tools/dependence_check.py could be run.

CLAUDE.md requires that an artifact say so where no comparator is reachable, and this says so: an argument from absence is weaker than a measurement. What it does establish is that the failure mode the gate exists to catch has nothing available to draw on.

This work is the third candidate of S089 and the first admissible one. Maupassant's «Menuet» and Villiers de l'Isle-Adam's «La Torture par l'espérance» were both gated on a discard rule frozen before either measurement, and both fired — 14 and 12 shared tokens against nulls at 2–3 tokens and zero shared 12-grams. Their manifests are workshop/canon/menuet/manifest.md and workshop/canon/torture-esperance/manifest.md; their gate translations are filed and were frozen before their measurements ran.
