Source manifest — I Malavoglia, Chapter I, the conscription of 'Ntoni
Not a canon member. A source text fetched for one unit (framework/v0.3 W1 family H,
HB-register's translation limb, S252) and frozen before a word of it was translated. It is a
fresh, disjoint extent of the chapter already used four times in workshop/translations/malavoglia-i/
(R06-v1, R21-v1, R22-v1, R23-v1, all S118–S137) — the opening through «chi comanda ha da dar
conto». This extent begins exactly where that one ends and none of its text is retranslated here.
Bibliographic
- Work: I Malavoglia
- Author: Giovanni Verga (1840–1922)
- First publication: 1881 (Treves)
- Public domain: author died 1922.
- Language: Italian, with Sicilian-inflected village idiom carried in standard orthography (Verga
writes no dialect spelling; the register drop is lexical, syntactic and rhetorical, not orthographic
— itself relevant to
HB-register's placelessness finding, §3).
Retrieval
- Source: it.wikisource.org, I Malavoglia/Capitolo I,
https://it.wikisource.org/wiki/I_Malavoglia/Capitolo_I, the same pageworkshop/translations/malavoglia-i/README.mdused as copy-text, fetched 2026-09-07. - Extent frozen here: the paragraph beginning «Nel dicembre 1863, 'Ntoni, il maggiore dei
nipoti…» through «— Va a dirle qualche cosa, a quella poveretta; non ne può più.» — the
conscription of 'Ntoni, the village's mocking and self-interested talk about it, and padron
'Ntoni's one directly quoted line at the close. 468 words, 2,738 characters.
sha256(source.txt) = 0df2f8588aa5367b63943f286054afbdd4411fe192c468ed221eb180b63f0134 - Extraction: the HTML page's
mw-parser-outputbody, tags stripped, page-break markers ([p. 4 modifica],[p. 5 modifica]) removed as artefacts of the wikisource page-scan apparatus, nothing else edited. - Why this extent. It is dense in exactly the material
HB-registerneeds for its translation limb: extended free-indirect reported speech carrying the village's mocking, self-interested voice (don Franco the apothecary, don Silvestro the secretary) at a register well below the narration's own neutral level; a gnomic authorial aside in the same low, concrete idiom (the prickly-pear-pad feet); two instances of adverbial reduplication, a folk-narrative rhythm device (zitti zitti, mogi mogi); and — the one place in the whole span the narration steps aside for it — a single directly quoted utterance, plain and terse, in padron 'Ntoni's own voice. No dialogue anywhere else in the passage is quoted; everything else is free indirect. That contrast (reported low register throughout vs. one quoted low-register line) is the siteHB-register's guidance item on discrete markers is applied to.
Contamination
suspected, declared on the standing basis already on record for this novel, not a fresh
measurement of this extent. workshop/translations/malavoglia-i/README.md and
T-malavoglia-i-R06-v1, -R23-v1 (S118–S137) already declare: the lead has rendered this book's
opening four times, and the lead knows the title of Mary A. Craig's 1890 English translation (The
House by the Medlar-Tree) but has not read a line of it or of any other published rendering of this
book. Both bases apply unchanged to this extent. No line of Craig's translation, or of any other
published rendering of this book, was read before this rendering and its log (below) were frozen.
A fresh tools/dependence_check.py run against a specific published hand's rendering of this exact
extent is not performed here, for the same reason T-max-havelaar-i-c-R04-v1 gave: it would require
opening that hand's English before this rendering existed, which the source-alone rule forbids. The
declaration stands on the novel-level basis, carried forward, per that precedent.
