T-william-wilson-R06-v1 — Poe, "William Wilson" (1839), the six paragraphs that carry a foreign-marked word — English → Russian, the project's first
Pair. English → Russian. The project's nineteen source languages have all been read into
English or Japanese; this is the first time it has written Russian. The passage is not chosen for
its beauty: it is every paragraph of the tale that carries a word Poe italicised because it is
foreign to English — ¶10, 11, 12, 36, 38, 39 — fixed by RS-20260812b §4.2's FOREIGN census,
which existed before E-20260812g was designed. 1,129 source words; 8 of the run's 25 FOREIGN
spans.
Source. Edgar Allan Poe, "William Wilson," The Gift (1840, dated 1839). Public domain.
Text as stored at workshop/experiments/E-20260812b-emphasis-carriage/materials/william-wilson.en.txt
(Project Gutenberg #2148), paragraph indices as numbered there.
Regime. R06 — lead single pass, source-only, no revision. Declared, and the reason
declared with it: R04 would give better Russian, and R04 §2a would also require the draft to
be frozen as a separate artifact first. The session's remaining depth belongs to the census this
translation is wired to, and the quantity the census reads off this text — which marks are here —
is not improved by a polish pass. What is given up is prose quality, and it is given up knowingly.
Contamination: suspected, and measured. See §Measurement below; the figure is reported
against Balmont's 1901 Russian, the comparator this translation is compared with, and the
measurement was taken by script, after this file was frozen. No Russian rendering of these
paragraphs was read before the freeze — every diagnostic run beforehand printed counts, or printed
markup with every Cyrillic character masked to · (E-20260812g §2.4).
Emphasis convention. _span_ is used for italics throughout, so the artifact renders as
italic and reads mechanically as the same channel the census uses for all four witnesses.

Translator's log
Written as the translation was written, frozen with it, before any Russian span of Balmont's was
read and before any figure in E-20260812g existed. Decisions and alternatives; no quality claims.
A. The eight marked words — the decisions the census will read
The design's question is what happens to a mark that says this word is foreign. Eight of them are here. Each entry says what was done and what decided it.
- ¶10
_peine forte et dure_→_peine forte et dure_, French, italic, kept. The phrase is the name of a specific English legal procedure and has no Russian equivalent, borrowed or native. It stays foreign in Russian exactly as it is foreign in English, so the mark still has its job. Alternative considered and rejected: a Russian gloss («под пыткой тяжестями»), which would have dissolved both the phrase and the joke — Poe is being mock-pedantic, and pedantry needs its Latin. - ¶11
_outré_→_outré_, French, italic, kept. Russian has утрированный from the same French verb, and it was live for about a minute; it means exaggerated, which is not what Poe's outré means here (beyond the ordinary, freakish). The borrowing exists but does not cover the sense, so the word arrives still foreign. - ¶11
_exergues_→_эксерги_, Cyrillic, italic, kept. The one genuinely mixed case. Russian numismatics has эксерга, so a Cyrillic form is available; but it is a specialists' word that an ordinary reader will not know, which is the condition Poe's italic is responding to. Mark kept, script changed — the two decisions came apart here, and they are separately recorded because the design'sP5asks about exactly that. - ¶12
_Oh, le bon temps, que ce siècle de fer!_→ unchanged, French, italic, kept. A whole French sentence, quoted as a quotation. Nothing to decide. - ¶36
_écarté!_→экарте, Cyrillic, no mark. Écarté was played in Russia and the Russian word for it is «экарте». In English the italic tells the reader "this is a French card game"; in Russian there is nothing for it to tell. Dropping the mark is not a loss — keeping it would have said something false, namely that the narrator is reaching for a foreign term. - ¶36
_parvenu_→Парвеню, Cyrillic, no mark. Same reasoning. Парвеню was ordinary Russian by 1900 and carries the full contempt of Poe's word without help. - ¶38
_écarté_→экарте, no mark. As 5. - ¶39
_écarté_→экарте, no mark. As 5.
The pattern I found myself following, stated because it was not in front of me when I started:
the mark went where the word arrived still foreign and went away where Russian had already
swallowed the word. I did not consult the sealed classification while translating; whether the two
agree is a fact about this file and n_lead.json, not a claim made here.
B. The word the source does not mark, and what I did about it
¶39's arrondées is French, technical, and Poe's witness leaves it in roman: "the species
called, technically, arrondees". The English does its marking lexically — called, technically — so
the typographic channel is not in use. I kept the word in Latin script and left it unitalicised.
Latin script inside Cyrillic already says "foreign" without using the emphasis channel, which is the
same division of labour Japanese gets from katakana. This is the one place in the passage where I
had a free hand to add a mark and chose not to; the reason is that Poe did not, and the alternative
would have been my emphasis, not his.
C. Other decisions worth recording
- ¶10 «в часы занятий». Poe's quoted "during hours" is school slang for the master's private time. Russian has no equivalent slang; the quotation marks carry it, and the phrase is left flat rather than colourfully domesticated.
- ¶10 "the classical usher" / "the English and mathematical". Usher here is an assistant master. I used «преподаватель» and let the quoted adjectives do the sorting, losing the period flavour of usher — a real loss, and there is no Russian school word of the right vintage that does not import a Russian institution.
- ¶11 "the third lustrum of my life" → «третьего пятилетия». Poe's lustrum is Latin and faintly pompous; Russian «люстр» in that sense is not available, and «пятилетие» is neutral. The pomposity is lost.
- ¶36's long final sentence is kept as one sentence. Poe's syntax in this paragraph is the gambler's self-exculpation working itself out in real time, and breaking it into Russian short sentences would have made him sound calm.
- ¶36 "the ill offices even of a fiend" → «от злых услуг самого дьявола». Ill offices is a fixed English politeness turned inside out; the Russian keeps the turn but not the idiom.
- ¶38 «Благоволите осмотреть». The double's speech is formal to the point of parody; the archaic Russian imperative is the closest thing to the register of "Please to examine".
- ¶39 "pigeon-winged" does not occur here — see the belfry file.
D. What was hard, and what a second pass would change
Russian is a target this project has not written before, and a single pass under R06 shows it:
the paragraph rhythm is more even than Poe's, whose sentences swing between very long and very
short. ¶12's catalogue of school days, in particular, wants a lighter hand. internal-judgment-only
— and, per charter §5, not a judgment I am entitled to make about my own output for the record.
Measurement — contamination against Balmont
Taken after the freeze, by tools/dependence_check.py, comparing this file's Russian against
Konstantin Balmont's «Вильям Вильсон» (Скорпион, 1901–12) over the same six paragraphs. Reported in
wiki/findings/results/RS-20260812g-foreign-italic.md §Contamination, with the longest common run
and the shared 7-gram count, per CLAUDE.md's standing rule that run length alone is a poor
proxy.
