T-odnazhdy-osenyu-R06-v1 — Максим Горький, «Однажды осенью» (1895), closing movement — the frozen draft
This page makes no evaluative claim about any translation. It is the R04 §2a frozen draft: the
single-pass rendering, written out and committed before the self-revision began, which is what
makes it an R06 artifact rather than a reconstruction (R04 §Procedure 2a; a draft never separately
committed may not be used as one).
- Source. Максим Горький, «Однажды осенью», 1895. Public domain. Text from ru.wikisource
(
Однажды осенью (Горький), source lineaz.lib.ru), stored as../R04-v1/source-ru.txt— the locus only, ¶84–99 of 108, 494 words, the story's closing movement from Natasha's first words of comfort to the narrator's benediction. - Regime.
R06v1.0 — lead, single pass, source only. - Translated by.
lead(Anthropic model; seeconfig/models.md§Lead agent as translator). - Cost. $0. Never ledgered (charter §3, A4).
- Contamination:
none, measured before the locus was fixed and before a word was translated. A gate span disjoint from this locus (¶20–21, the evening and the overturned boat) was rendered first and compared bytools/dependence_check.pyagainst the whole of the published English rendering in Best Russian Short Stories (ed. Thomas Seltzer, 1917, Project Gutenberg #13437), which was extracted to disk programmatically and never read. Result: 5 shared 7-grams, 0 twelve-grams, 0 fifteen-grams, longest common contiguous run 9 tokens — "that very night the sky was heavy and dark", a literal rendering of a plain sentence. Both figures are reported because run length alone has failed as a proxy three times (CLAUDE.md). Raw output:../R04-v1/contamination/dep.json. No published rendering of this work was read at any point before both this draft and the R04 revision were committed. - Lineage. Drafted, committed, then revised into
T-odnazhdy-osenyu-R04-v1in the same session.
The draft
— What's the matter with you? Eh? Cold, is it? Freezing? Oh, what a one you are! Sits there and never says a word… like an owl! You might have told me long ago that you were cold… Well… lie down on the ground… stretch yourself out… and I'll lie down too… there! Now put your arms round me… tighter… There, and you must be warm now… And afterwards we'll lie back to back… We'll get the night over somehow… What is it — been drinking? Turned out of your place?… Never mind!
She was comforting me… She was giving me heart…
Damn me three times over! What irony there was over me in that fact! Think of it!
For at that time I was seriously troubled about the destinies of mankind, I dreamed of the reorganisation of the social order, of political upheavals, I read all manner of devilishly clever books whose depth of thought was probably out of reach even of the men who wrote them — at that time I was doing everything I could to make of myself "a large active force". And it was me that a woman who sold herself was warming with her body, a wretched, beaten, hunted creature with no place in life and no value in it, a creature whom it never entered my head to help until she had helped me, and whom, even if it had entered my head, I could hardly have helped with anything at all.
Ah, I was ready to think that all this was happening to me in a dream, in an absurd dream, in a heavy dream…
But alas! I could not think it, for the cold drops of rain were falling on me, a woman's breast was pressed hard to my breast, her warm breath was on my face — with a faint bouquet of vodka to it, but so quickening… The wind howled and moaned, the rain drummed on the boat, the waves splashed, and the two of us, holding each other tight, shivered with cold all the same. It was all of it entirely real, and I am sure that no one ever had a dream as heavy and as vile as that reality.
And Natasha kept talking about something, talking as tenderly and as feelingly as only women can talk. Under her words, naïve and tender as they were, a small flame began to burn quietly inside me, and something in my heart thawed at it.
Then the tears came from my eyes in a torrent, and they washed off my heart much of the malice, the misery, the stupidity and the filth that had crusted on it before that night… Natasha was already coaxing me:
— There now, my dear, don't cry! There now! Please God you'll get well again, you'll find another place… and everything…
And all the while she kissed me. Many kisses, past counting, and hot…
They were the first kisses from a woman that life ever handed me, and they were the best of them; for all that came after cost frightfully dear and gave me next to nothing.
— There, don't cry, you funny creature! I'll settle you tomorrow, if you've nowhere to go…
— so I heard, as through a dream, the quiet, persuading whisper…
…Till dawn we lay in each other's arms…
And when it grew light we crawled out from under the boat and walked into the town… Then we said goodbye like friends and never met again, though for a good half-year I hunted through every slum for that dear Natasha with whom I spent the night I have described here, once in the autumn…
If she is dead already — how good for her! — then may she rest! And if she is living — peace to her soul! And may the knowledge of her fall never wake in it… for that would be a suffering both needless and barren for life…
Translator's log
Frozen at commit time, before the revision began and before any evaluation of this text was
designed (charter §3, A4; workshop/translations/README.md). Decisions and alternatives, not
quality claims.
Sixteen sites, single pass, no reference consulted on the target side.
| # | ¶ | site | live options | chosen | given up |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 84 | как сыч! — a сыч is a little owl and the word carries "morose, silent, sits alone" |
"like an owl"; "like a stuffed owl"; "mum as a mouse"; drop the bird | "like an owl" | the specific morose-loner connotation, which English owl does not carry (English owls are wise) |
| 2 | 84 | Natasha's ellipses — she talks in ten fragments joined by … |
keep every …; convert to dashes; punctuate as full sentences |
keep every … |
nothing; this is the shape of her speech |
| 3 | 84 | С места прогнали? — literally "were you driven from your place [of employment]?" |
"Turned out of your place?"; "Lose your job?"; "Sacked?" | "Turned out of your place?" | the modern flatness of "job"; place is the period word and matches her register |
| 4 | 85 | Она меня утешала… Она меня ободряла… — two four-word clauses, identical shape, object fronted |
keep the two-clause parallel; fuse into one clause; front "me" in English ("It was me she was comforting…") | keep the two-clause parallel, "She was comforting me… She was giving me heart…" | the Russian object-fronting, which English word order cannot do without adding words and killing the four-beat shape |
| 5 | 86 | Будь я трижды проклят! |
"Damn me three times over!"; "Thrice damned be I!"; "May I be damned three times over!" | "Damn me three times over!" | the Church-Slavonic curl of трижды проклят; the English is an oath and not a formula |
| 6 | 86 | Сколько было иронии надо мной — irony standing over him |
"What irony there was over me"; "how much irony there was at my expense"; "the irony of it, heaped on my head" | "What irony there was over me in that fact!" — flagged for the revision as possibly not English | — |
| 7 | 87 | «крупная активная сила» in scare quotes — a phrase out of the books he was reading |
"a large active force"; "a great active force"; "a major force for action" | "a large active force" — flagged for the revision; крупный is large but the English collocation wants great |
— |
| 8 | 87 | продажная женщина |
"a prostitute"; "a woman who sold herself"; "a woman for sale" | "a woman who sold herself" | the noun's bluntness; the chosen phrase is a clause and slows the sentence, which is a real cost here |
| 9 | 87 | загнанное существо — загнанный is what you call a horse ridden to death or a hunted animal run down |
"hunted"; "driven"; "hounded"; "run into the ground" | "hunted" | the exhaustion in the Russian, which is as strong as the pursuit |
| 10 | 87 | нет цены — "no price", i.e. worthless, but the same phrase in Russian idiom can mean priceless |
"no value in it"; "no price on her"; "worth nothing to anyone" | "no value in it" | the double edge; English cannot hold both readings in three words |
| 11 | 88 | в нелепом сне, в тяжёлом сне — a triple with the noun repeated |
keep all three limbs and both repetitions; keep two; compress to one adjective pair | keep all three | nothing |
| 12 | 89 | с легоньким букетом водки — букет is the wine-taster's word, and it is a joke |
"with a faint bouquet of vodka to it"; "smelling a little of vodka"; "with a slight nose of vodka" | "with a faint bouquet of vodka to it" | nothing; bouquet survives into English carrying the same joke |
| 13 | 90 | тихо затеплился некий огонёк — затеплиться is what a votive lamp does |
"a small flame began to burn quietly"; "a little light was kindled"; "something began to glow" | "a small flame began to burn quietly" | the votive-lamp register, which would need "kindled" and a church noun to carry |
| 14 | 91 | градом полились слёзы — tears poured like hail |
"in a torrent"; "like hail"; "in floods" | "in a torrent" — flagged for the revision; hail is the image and torrent is the English idiom, and I took the idiom without deciding | the hail |
| 15 | 91 | накипевшей — накипь is the scale that forms in a kettle |
"crusted on it"; "that had scaled it"; "that had caked on it" | "crusted on it" | the kettle |
| 16 | 99 | в мире да почиет! / мир душе её! — a paired liturgical formula, Church-Slavonic word order |
render both as English liturgical formulae; render both plainly; keep one and plain the other | "then may she rest!" / "peace to her soul!" — flagged for the revision; the first is under-strength against почиет |
— |
Six sites carried forward to the revision as unresolved (6, 7, 14, 16, plus the rhythm of ¶87's last clause and ¶89's "It was all of it entirely real"). The revision's job is those and nothing else; a self-revision that rewrites what the draft settled is not the R04 procedure.
