T-iliad-sarpedon-R07-v1 — Iliad XII.310–327, Sarpedon to Glaucus, under R07 (fluency)

The translation

Glaucus, why is it that the two of us get the greatest honors at home in Lycia — the best seat, the best cut of the meat, a cup that is always full — and why does everybody there look at us the way they look at gods? Why do we hold that big estate on the banks of the Xanthus, good land, orchard and wheat field both? Because of all that, we have to stand now in the Lycian front line and go into the worst of the fighting, so that the Lycians in their heavy armor can say of us: "Our kings rule Lycia with real honor. They eat the best mutton and drink the best sweet wine, but they are strong men as well, because they fight in the front line with the rest of us." My friend, if getting clear of this war meant that the two of us would then live forever and never grow old, I would not be fighting in the front line myself and I would not be sending you into the battle where a man makes his name. But that is not how it is. Death is waiting for us in more forms than anyone can count, and nobody alive gets away from it.

184 English words from 18 Greek lines.

Contamination

none, measured before the locus was translated, per the standing rule in CLAUDE.md. The lead rendered a different span of the same book (XII.331–341) from the Greek alone, and tools/dependence_check.py compared it with Butler 1898 and Lang–Leaf–Myers 1883:

pair shared 7-grams 12 15 longest common run
Butler ~ Lang (two published translators) 0 0 0 4
Butler ~ lead 0 0 0 6
Lang ~ lead 0 0 0 5

Zero shared 7-grams against both comparators, with the lead's longest runs at the same order as the two published translators' own. Both quantities are reported because run length alone has failed as a proxy three times (CLAUDE.md).

One exposure, declared. While the gate span was being extracted from Butler and Lang, the extraction window opened on line 328, the closing line of Sarpedon's speech, in both renderings. Line 328 is therefore outside this translation's locus and outside every comparison this translation takes part in. Nothing of XII.310–327 was seen in any English rendering before this text and its log were written.

Translator's log

Written as the draft was written. Decisions and alternatives, not quality claims. Frozen by commit before any evaluation was designed. Coverage codes are R07 §5's, under the strict test (a rule names the feature and exactly one live option survives), and the exclusion-test rate is not computed (S073 binding condition).

# site (Greek) live options chosen code rules note
1 Γλαῦκε, Λυκίῃ, Ξάνθοιο Glaukos/Lykia/Xanthos · Glaucus/Lycia/Xanthus Glaucus / Lycia / Xanthus D F4 F4's third clause names proper-noun conventions where an English one exists; it does. One survivor.
2 νῶϊ (dual) we · we two · the two of us the two of us P F1, F7 English has no dual. "We two" is current but marked; "the two of us" and a bare "we" both satisfy F1 and F7. Two survivors.
3 ἕδρῃ τε κρέασίν τε ἰδὲ πλείοις δεπάεσσιν with seat and meats and fuller cups · the best seat, the best cut of the meat, a cup that is always full the second D F6 The three bare datives are not English. F6 licenses departure and (IR2, textual) forbids no paraphrase; only the rebuilt version is idiomatic.
4 πλείοις δεπάεσσιν (comparative) fuller cups · a cup that is always full always full D F8 The comparative has no stated standard. F8 requires one reading written down.
5 θεοὺς ὣς εἰσορόωσι look on us as gods · treat us like gods · look at us the way they look at gods the third P F1, F6 All three are current and idiomatic. Two or more survive.
6 τέμενος temenos · precinct · demesne · estate estate D F2, F4 F4 excludes the untranslated Greek; F2 excludes temenos and demesne as specialized/dated. One survivor of the four.
7 νεμόμεσθα pasture · graze · hold · possess hold D F8 The verb carries "pasture" and "possess" at once. F8 forbids reproducing the ambiguity; only "hold" reads on both without being either.
8 ἀρούρης πυροφόροιο wheat-bearing plough-land · wheat field wheat field D F10 (IR1, literal) Under the literal reading of F10 the compound calque is exactly a word choice noticed as a word choice.
9 μάχης καυστείρης the burning battle · the scorching fight · the worst of the fighting the worst of the fighting D F10 (IR1, literal) Same ruling. This cost the fire image the Greek has.
10 πύκα θωρηκτάων close-corsleted · thickly-armored · in their heavy armor in their heavy armor D F1, F2 Corslet is dated (F1); thickly-armored is a calque with no English currency (F2, and F10 under IR1).
11 οὐ μὰν ἀκλεέες not gloryless · not without honor · with real honor with real honor D F10 (IR1, literal) The litotes is a figure. Under the literal ruling it goes.
12 ἔδουσί … πίονα μῆλα eat the fat sheep · eat the best mutton the best mutton P F1, F2 Both current and standard; the choice is between the source's fat and English's best. Two survivors — and note the rules do not name what is actually at stake here.
13 οἶνόν … μελιηδέα honey-sweet wine · sweet wine · the best sweet wine the best sweet wine D F10 (IR1, literal) The compound is a figure under the literal reading.
14 ὦ πέπον soft one · good friend · my friend · old man my friend D F1, F3 Soft one is a calque with no English use (F10); old man is colloquial (F3); good friend is dated (F1). One survivor.
15 ἀγήρω τ' ἀθανάτω τε ageless and deathless · ageless and immortal · live forever and never grow old the third D F6, F7 The paired verbal adjectives have no English construction. F6 licenses the rebuild; only it is idiomatic.
16 anacoluthon at 322–324 (εἰ μὲν γὰρ … ἔσσεσθ') reproduce the break · repair into a conditional repair D F7 F7 forbids fragments and requires every clause its finite verb. One survivor.
17 μάχην ἐς κυδιάνειραν man-ennobling battle · the battle that brings men glory · the battle where a man makes his name the third D F10 (IR1, literal) The compound epithet resolved; the ennobling claim is not carried.
18 κῆρες … θανάτοιο μυρίαι the Keres of death, ten thousand of them · a thousand deaths standing over us · death is waiting in more forms than anyone can count the third D F4, F10 (IR1, literal) F4 excludes the untranslated Keres; the literal F10 excludes the personification. This is the largest single loss in the text: the Greek has named divinities physically standing over the two men, and the rendering has an abstraction.
19 clause order 310–314 (one interrogative period) one period · two questions two questions P F6, F7, F9 Both satisfy all three. Two survivors.
20 end of locus at 327 leave the sentence open · close it close it D F7, F9 The Greek's apodosis is at 328, outside this locus. F7 and F9 both require closure, so the translator supplied it. An artifact of the locus boundary, not of the source.

Missing rules that fired

One observation, flagged

internal-judgment-only. Every rule that decided a site here decided it by naming a property of English, never by naming a property of the source — F4 spelling, F2 currency, F7 syntax, F8 disambiguation, F10 plainness. That is RS-20260801 §11 arriving on a sixth source language, and it is a statement about where the rule set looks, not about whether the rendering is good.
