Söderberg, «Pelsen» — source manifest
Hjalmar Söderberg (1869–1941), «Pelsen», in Historietter (Stockholm: Bonnier, 1898); text here from Skrifter av Hjalmar Söderberg II (1919), the author's own collected edition.
- Language: Swedish. The project's thirteenth source language and its first Scandinavian
source other than Kielland's Norwegian (
workshop/translations/karen/). - Extent: the whole story. 34 paragraphs, 1,273 words, 7,140 characters.
- Orthography: pre-1906 reform Swedish as printed — blefvo, öfrigt, hufvudet, önskvärdt, lifförsäkringspremien. Left exactly as printed; not modernised, because the source's own period marking is a fact a translator has to decide about and normalising it would make that decision invisible.
Provenance
Swedish Wikisource, proofread page namespace, Sida:Historietter.djvu/51–/60, transcluded by
Historietter/Pelsen. Fetched programmatically by fetch.py (this directory) on 2026-08-01,
session S079, via the MediaWiki API. Every page in the range is at pagequality level="4"
(proofread).
Public domain. Söderberg died 1941; the text was published 1898/1919. No consulted.md entry
is required — nothing copyrighted was opened.
What the fetcher does, and the one defect it had to be repaired for
fetch.py strips the <noinclude> proofreading apparatus, removes the running-head and rule
templates, joins hard-wrapped lines, undoes the print edition's end-of-line hyphenation, and joins
across page boundaries.
{{Tomrad}} — the print edition's blank line, i.e. a paragraph break — is carried through the
page join as a sentinel character rather than as \n\n. The first version wrote \n\n and the
page-join's rstrip() ate it whenever the marker fell at the end of a scanned page, which it does
at two of the three occurrences here: two paragraph breaks were silently deleted and two
paragraphs of 272 and 299 words appeared where the print edition has four. Caught by reading the
paragraph-length distribution, not by any check in the tool. This is note (beg)'s shape one
level up — the tool reported nothing wrong because nothing it counts went wrong — and the general
lesson is now note (bgv).
Post-repair check, run and passed: the transcluded wikitext contains exactly {{Tomrad}} ×3,
{{linje}} ×1, <div> ×4 and <big> ×1, and the stored file contains no {{, [[ or <.
Structure
Four scene-breaks marked * in the printed text (paragraphs 12, 17, 25 here), giving five
movements: the loan, the walk home, the arrival, the dinner, the last exchange.
