Source manifest — Max Havelaar, chapter I, the Lukas paragraphs
Not a canon member. A source text fetched for one unit (framework/v0.3 W1 step I, HB-realia's
translation limb, S249) and frozen before a word of it was translated. It is the third, disjoint
extent taken from this chapter — the first (workshop/canon/max-havelaar-i/, ¶1–4, 716 words, S077)
and the second (workshop/canon/max-havelaar-i-b/, ¶7–9, 521 words, S112) are untouched by this run
and none of their text is retranslated here.
Bibliographic
- Work: Max Havelaar, of de koffiveilingen der Nederlandsche Handelmaatschappy
- Author: Multatuli (Eduard Douwes Dekker, 1820–1887)
- First publication: 1860. The Gutenberg text is a later authorial edition carrying Multatuli's own
orthography (
yforij, koffi, zoo, myn), preserved here unmodernised. - Public domain: author died 1887.
- Language: Dutch.
Retrieval
- Source: Project Gutenberg ebook #11024,
https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/11024/pg11024.txt, fetched 2026-09-05, UTF-8 (the same edition the first two extents used). - Extent frozen here: chapter I (
EERSTE HOOFDSTUK), the three body paragraphs beginning «En dan die beloonde deugd!…» and ending «…Voor myn deugd eisch ik niets.» — the "beloonde deugd" / Lukas-the-warehouseman digression immediately following the theatre paragraphsmax-havelaar-i-bfroze. 403 words, 2,347 characters.sha256(source.txt) = 1478ce3dd88a7d6ba11fcd9a24e3319d1d88367f4d3551e07e88849be8fc430c - Extraction:
sed -n '286,319p'on the fetched plain-text edition, the paragraph boundaries being the blank lines either side; nothing else was edited. - Why this extent. It is the passage in chapter I densest in the culture-bound items
HB-realianeeds to apply its own guidance to: a firm name (Last & Co, formerly Last & Meyer), an occupational rank with no one-word English match (pakhuisknecht), a named institution (de Bank), a currency (zeventien gulden), a real place functioning as social furniture rather than mere geography (Driebergen, where an Amsterdam merchant retires), and a pair of ordinary professions whose English choice risks planting an unwanted nationality signal (dokter en apteker) — six decision sites in 403 words, each of a different kind. - Transcriber's emphasis convention: underscores mark the original's italics (
_is_,_goed_,_Ik_×3,_kon_). Six occur here. Kept as they stand, per the first extent's convention.
Comparator — reachable, and not opened before the translation and its log were frozen
- Baron Alphonse Nahuÿs, Max Havelaar; or, the coffee auctions of the Dutch trading company (1868)
— Project Gutenberg ebook #70128, the same comparator the first two extents named. Not fetched or
opened in this session; no line of it was displayed to the translator before both the translation and
its log were frozen (
workshop/translations/README.md§Contamination;CLAUDE.md§Translation rules 1).
Contamination — the selection gate
CLAUDE.md's standing rule requires a dependence_check.py measurement to precede selection, as a
gate, and bars a fresh diagnostic run from substituting for one made before any locus was chosen.
That gate was already fired for this work, translator and comparator combination at S077 —
T-max-havelaar-i-R07-v1 (796 lead words of chapter I ¶1–4 against 924 words of Nahuÿs) returned
66 shared 7-grams, 13 shared 12-grams, 0 excluding names, longest common run 17 tokens, declared
suspected; max-havelaar-i-b's selection (S112) was taken on that same figure rather than a fresh
run, on the reasoning that a per-extent re-measurement of an unread comparator against an
as-yet-untranslated span cannot be computed — the check needs two finished English texts, and
priming this extent's translation with an early run would itself violate rule 1. This extent is
selected on the same S077 figure, for the same reason. The translation this manifest gates
(T-max-havelaar-i-c-R04-v1) accordingly carries contamination: suspected from selection, and the
figure is not re-measured against Nahuÿs after the fact because — as with max-havelaar-i-b — no
comparison in HB-realia turns on this rendering's independence from Nahuÿs: the entry's application
is illustrative (a fresh passage under the entry's own guidance), not a design whose validity requires
an independent third witness.
