Public-domain verification
- Japan (charter rule — author's death + 70 years): died 1933; 1933 + 70 = 2003 → past the death+70 threshold, so public domain in Japan (nominal onset 1 Jan 2004). Over-determined: the work was already PD under Japan's former 50-year term (from 1 Jan 1984), which the 2018 term extension did not revive — so PD status does not hinge on the extension. ✓
- US: published 1924 → public domain in the US.
Length (verified 2026-07-23)
- 5390 non-whitespace characters (4786 CJK). Criterion 3 (whole-work translatability): target ≤ ~10,000, hard ceiling ~13,000 → PASS.
Text condition
Clean, but note two source-authentic orthographic features preserved verbatim: (1) historical kana (歴史的仮名遣い) — すつかり, やうな, なほり, 二疋; (2) the vertical-writing kana iteration mark /\ (2 occurrences: ぴか/\, かさ/\ = ぴかぴか, かさかさ). Onomatopoeia- and dialogue-heavy. A translator/tool must read /\ as kana repetition, not literal glyphs.
Known English translations (precedent / contamination awareness)
Moderately translated (several published English versions of this well-known tale). Specific catalogue is a prior pending Slate C verification.
