Today an extraordinary thing happened to me. I got up rather late, and when Mavra brought in my boots, cleaned, I asked what the time was. Hearing that ten had struck long ago, I dressed in a great hurry. I admit I would not have gone in to the department at all, knowing in advance the sour face our section head would pull. He has been at me for ages: "What is this muddle you always have in your head, my dear fellow? Sometimes you tear about like a scalded cat, you get a case into such a tangle that Satan himself could not unpick it, you write a title with a small letter, you leave off the date and the number." Damned heron! He is jealous — jealous that I sit in the Director's own study and trim the quills for His Excellency. In short, I would not have gone in at all but for the hope of catching the treasurer and wheedling something out of that Jew, some part of my salary in advance. There's a creature for you! That he should ever pay out a month's money before the day — Lord above, the Last Judgment will come first. Ask till you burst, be in the direst need — he will not part with it, the grey devil. And at home his own cook slaps his face. The whole world knows it. I cannot see what there is to be got out of serving in a department. No resources of any kind. Now the provincial board, the civil and treasury chambers — that is quite another matter. There you will see some fellow squeezed into a corner, scribbling away. A wretched little coat on him, a face you want to spit at — and then look at the country house he takes! Don't so much as offer him a gilt porcelain cup: "That," he says, "is a present for a doctor." What he wants is a pair of trotters, or a droshky, or a beaver worth three hundred roubles. To look at him, meek as anything; he speaks so delicately — "Lend me your little knife, I must mend my pen" — and then he cleans a petitioner out and leaves him standing in his shirt. Still, our service is a noble one; there is a cleanliness about everything that the provincial board will never see in its life: mahogany desks, and every chief speaking to you politely. Yes, I admit it: if it were not for the nobility of the service I should have left the department long ago.
Translator's log
Written at translation time, frozen before any evaluation of this triple was designed. Decisions and
alternatives, not quality claims. Any evaluative sentence carries internal-judgment-only.
C carries no MOVE set, so most of what follows is the ordinary business of the passage; it is
recorded here because A and B are defined as departures from these choices, and a departure needs
a stated baseline.
| # | site | Russian | live options | chosen | given up | sense |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | opening | «случилось необыкновенное приключение» | an extraordinary adventure occurred · an extraordinary thing happened to me | the second | «приключение» is adventure, and the diarist's self-dramatising choice of that word is part of what he gives away. English adventure here reads as a translation artefact; thing loses the self-dramatising. Cost accepted, and it is the passage's first loss | voice, accuracy |
| 2 | «Мавра принесла мне вычищенные сапоги» | the participle is attributive | my cleaned boots · my boots, cleaned | the second | my cleaned boots is unremarkable English; the comma keeps the boots and their state as two beats, which is nearer the Russian's rhythm and lets the servant's completed task register | style-correspondence |
| 3 | «какую кислую мину сделает» | idiom | what a sour face he would make · the sour face he would pull | pull | make a face is the neutral British idiom, pull a face the colloquial one; the register point declared is unmarked, and pull sits inside it while carrying more of the diarist's grievance | naturalness |
| 4 | «братец» | diminutive of брат, used down the hierarchy | brother · my dear fellow · old chap | my dear fellow | brother is not English address; old chap makes the chief friendlier than he is. The condescension survives; the kinship metaphor does not. This is the A-garnett-vanka shape — Russian address morphology going into English periphrasis and losing systematicity |
cultural-mediation, style-correspondence |
| 5 | «метаешься как угорелый» | rush about like one overcome by fumes | like a scalded cat · like a madman · like one poisoned by fumes | like a scalded cat | the literal image (charcoal fumes) is dead in English and would need a gloss; like a madman is unusable here for an obvious reason — the work's title is what it is, and putting madman into the narrator's mouth on page one plants a signal Gogol does not plant. Scalded cat is the English idiom of the same force | style-correspondence, affect |
| 6 | «в титуле поставишь маленькую букву» | the titul is the honorific formula of address in a document | you write a title with a small letter · you fail to capitalise a form of address | the first | the second is a gloss. The first is opaque in the way the complaint should be — it is a clerk's shop-talk and the reader is meant to be outside it | cultural-mediation |
| 7 | «Проклятая цапля!» | cursed heron | damned heron · cursed stork | damned heron | the bird is the chief's long neck; the English keeps the bird and the abuse. A and B are built to hold this site fixed in content and to differ around it |
style-correspondence |
| 8 | «очиниваю перья» | trimming a quill's nib | sharpen the quills · trim the quills · cut the pens | trim the quills | sharpen suggests a pencil; pens loses the quill. The whole joke of the passage is that this is the distinction he is proud of, so the object has to stay visible | accuracy, affect |
| 9 | «у этого жида» | «жид» is a slur, not the neutral «еврей» | that Jew · the corresponding English slur · that skinflint | that Jew |
This underrenders, and the loss is declared rather than absorbed. The Russian word is abuse and the English is not; the English slur is available and would carry the force. It was not taken because the passage is the narrator's casual bigotry rendered as though it were unremarkable, and the English slur is not unremarkable to a modern reader — it would become the loudest thing on the page and would be read as the translator's emphasis rather than the narrator's habit. Skinflint deletes the bigotry entirely and was rejected for that. What is lost: that this is a word Poprishchin reaches for without thinking. The site is identical in all three members and cannot separate them | cultural-mediation, voice, accuracy |
| 10 | «Проси, хоть тресни» | ask till you split | ask till you burst · beg yourself hoarse | ask till you burst | keeps the bodily image; hoarse substitutes a different body | style-correspondence |
| 11 | «седой черт» | grey-haired devil | grey devil · old devil | grey devil | old is the idiomatic English abuse and loses the hair, which is the one physical detail the treasurer gets | accuracy |
| 12 | «Никаких совершенно ресурсов.» | a verbless fragment | No resources of any kind. · There are absolutely no resources. | the fragment | the Russian is a fragment and the diary form licenses it. Holding the fragment here matters for the triple: A's MOVE set requires it to become a sentence, and the departure needs something to depart from |
style-correspondence |
| 13 | «дачу» | a summer house outside town | country house · dacha · villa | country house | dacha is copy-opaque and would import a foreignness the sentence's outrage cannot carry — the point is that the sum is enormous, not that the institution is Russian. The A-shaw-spider-thread fork, resolved toward transparent calque |
cultural-mediation |
| 14 | «бобер рублей в триста» | a beaver — i.e. a beaver-fur collar or coat | a beaver worth three hundred roubles · a beaver collar worth three hundred roubles | the first | the second explains the joke. The list is a list of things a bribe buys and the reader can hold an unexplained beaver in it | cultural-mediation, accuracy |
| 15 | «обчистит так, что только одну рубашку оставит на просителе» | cleans out so that only a shirt is left on the petitioner | cleans him out and leaves him standing in his shirt · strips him to his shirt | the first | English cleans out is the same metaphor as «обчистит»; standing in his shirt keeps the petitioner upright and visible, which the Russian's «на просителе» does | style-correspondence |
| 16 | «и все начальники на вы» | every superior uses the polite second person | every chief speaking to you politely · every chief says "you" to you · a footnote | every chief speaking to you politely |
The T/V category has no English exponent — the exact A-garnett-vanka loss, and here it is load-bearing, because this is one of the two things the noble service consists of. The literal option is not English. The chosen phrase keeps the fact and loses the grammar: what was a category is now a manner adverb, and the deadpan of the original — that nobility means a pronoun — is dulled. This is the passage's largest single loss and it is the same loss in all three members |
style-correspondence, cultural-mediation |
| 17 | «служба благородная» / «благородство службы» | noble in the estate sense as well as the moral one | noble both times · gentlemanly then nobility | noble / nobility | the repetition is the joke's frame — he opens and closes on the word — and splitting it for idiom would break the frame | consistency, style-correspondence |
Rows: 17. Tally computed by analysis/checks.py over this table, per the standing condition on
translator's-log tallies (note (bey)); the script is committed with the tally.
What was hard, in one paragraph. The passage is a man denouncing bribe-takers on his way to beg
for an advance, and nothing in it says so. Everything is carried by what he chooses to mention and
by the order he mentions it in — the grievance, then the jealous gloss on the grievance, then the
errand, then a page of moral indignation at other men's greed, then the two possessions that make
his own service noble: the furniture and a pronoun. The translator's whole problem is to keep his
hand out of it. Twice I wrote a sentence that put a knowing edge on the diarist's own words and cut
it, at site 1 and again at the close; the edge is B's job and C may not have it.
One thing that surprised me (internal-judgment-only): the T/V loss at site 16 is not a
consolation-prize loss here. In A-garnett-vanka the vanished «вы» is a single slip inside a letter.
Here the pronoun is one of exactly two exhibits the narrator produces for the nobility of his
profession, so an English reader is handed a list whose second item has quietly been replaced by a
manner adverb — and the sentence still works, which is the disquieting part.
