«Шинель» — the person of consequence

Source and copy-text

Nikolai Gogol, «Шинель» (1842). Public domain everywhere; Gogol died in 1852.

Copy-text: Wikisource ru, Шинель (Гоголь)/ПСС 1938 (СО), whose stated source is the Полное собрание сочинений (1937–1952), том 3, стр. 139–174 (FEB, feb-web.ru). Fetched 2026-08-10 by direct action=raw request. The wikitext was reduced to plain text in session: templates, <ref> notes and link markup stripped; the one template that carried text rather than apparatus — «приговаривая: {{lang|fr|bonjour, papa}}» — was restored by hand after the strip removed it, which is recorded because a silent template strip removes words, not only markup.

Gogol's разрядка (spaced type) on some occurrences of «значительное лицо» survives in the wikitext as ''…''; it is preserved in the source files as *…*.

The two frozen spans

source-unit.txt the translated unit — Block A, the significant person's remorse and his evening; Block B, the ghost at his collar and the flight home 611 7
census-span.txt not translated — the portrait of the significant person, from Akaky's decision to go to him to "he can wait". Held for E-20260810w's census 554 16

Renderings

id regime what
T-shinel-znachitelnoe-R06-v1 R06 the frozen single-pass draft, committed at 6d3e0f1 before the revision began (R04 §2a)
T-shinel-znachitelnoe-R04-v1 R04 the self-revision, with the translator's log, frozen at f77b3ae before E-20260810w's design was written

analysis/log_counts.py parses the log and both artifacts and asserts every tally in it: 19 of 19 checks pass. Three of the nineteen failed on first writing — a word count that counted the block markers, a regex in which great man matched great many, and a claim in the log that Gogol writes «руку» three times in the wife's sentence when he writes it twice. All three were caught by the script and none by rereading, which is what the binding condition in workshop/translations/README.md exists for.

Contamination

high, declared on both artifacts before the gate was run, and confirmed by it.

«Шинель» is one of the most translated stories in Russian and the lead knows published English renderings by recall. The phrase it chose — person of consequence — is Constance Garnett's; the lead did not open any English rendering of these two blocks before freezing the draft, and does not claim to have arrived at the phrase independently.

tools/dependence_check.py, run immediately after the freeze commit and before any of E-20260810w existed:

pair 7-grams 12-grams 15-grams longest run verdict
Hapgood 1886 ~ lead R04, Block A 20 1 0 12 DEPENDENT?
Garnett 1923 ~ lead R04, Block B 22 3 0 14 DEPENDENT?
Garnett 1923 ~ Hapgood 1886, Block B 21 7 4 18 DEPENDENT?
Garnett 1923 ~ Hapgood 1886, Block A 3 0 0 8 clean
Hapgood 1886 ~ lead, Block B 5 0 0 9 clean
Garnett 1923 ~ lead, Block A 17 0 0 10 clean
Field 1916 ~ every other hand, both blocks ≤ 2 0 0 ≤ 8 clean
lead R06 ~ lead R04 408 / 329 378 / 309 360 / 300 137 / 139 note (bhb)'s shape; the revision changed little

The comparator set includes the project's own prior renderings (note (bhb), as amended at S128). The project holds one prior Gogol translation — workshop/translations/patsyuk/ — but it is from «Ночь перед Рождеством», a different work with no text in common, so it is not a comparator here.

Consequence, binding: the lead's rendering is not a hand in E-20260810w's census and no figure in RS-20260810w includes it. It is the arm's translation limb and process evidence (R04 §Known limitations: R04 output on a famous work is a practice artifact and a source of process evidence, not an independent measurement of translating ability).

And one thing the gate found that is not about the lead. Garnett 1923 and Hapgood 1886 share 18 contiguous tokens and four 15-grams in Block B — more than the lead shares with either. Two published hands, thirty-seven years apart, are not independent on that stretch. It is recorded on the anchor and it moved a registered prediction before dispatch.
