«El Miserere», the vision — the source's high-register devices, listed from the Spanish alone
Frozen and committed before either rendering was begun. This is the analogue of RS-20260813g
§8's S1 column on «Flipperne»: a site list fixed on the source side, so that carriage can be
coded afterwards at sites nobody chose after seeing the English.
What it is not. It does not say what the English at each site should be. Pre-committing the target forms would steer the translation and would be note (bhc)(iv)'s defect — fitting the work to the hypothesis. Only the Spanish sites and the coding rule are fixed here.
Who codes it. The lead, after both renderings are frozen. It is therefore a translator-coded
audit column, never a primary, and the asymmetry is stated wherever the figure appears — exactly
the standing given to R07's translator-reported inversion count in RS-20260813h §2.
Coding rule, fixed now
Each site is coded C (carried) or D (domesticated) in each rendering:
- Class A (lexical), 14 sites. C = the English at this site uses the learned Latin- or Romance-derived word that the Spanish uses, or an equally learned English cognate of it. D = the English uses the ordinary modern English term for the same referent.
- Class B (syntactic), 10 sites. C = the English reproduces the named construction — the same suspension, the same order, the same repetition, unbroken. D = the construction is resolved, re-ordered, or split into separate sentences.
- A site with no English counterpart at all (omission) is coded D.

|---|---|---|
| B1 | P1 | The suspended period. Nine catalogued subjects (doseles … gradas … sillares … antepechos … festones … machones … pavimento … bóvedas … la iglesia entera) held before the verb comenzó á iluminarse, which arrives ~55 words after the cuando. C = the catalogue precedes its verb, unbroken and unsummarised. |
| B2 | P1 | Plural catalogue, singular verb (la iglesia entera, comenzó). C = the English verb agrees with the last item, not with the list. |
| B3 | P3 | Las piedras se reunieron á las piedras — figura etymologica, the noun repeated across the verb. C = the noun is repeated. |
| B4 | P3 | The 62-word second period (Las piedras … laberinto de pórfido) run as one sentence with the y al par del ara hinge. C = not split. |
| B5 | P5 | The 58-word single period from El osado peregrino to se erizaron de horror, four coordinated clauses on one breath. C = not split. |
| B6 | P6 | The great hyperbaton. Two absolute participial phrases (Mal envueltos…, caladas las capuchas…) plus a relative, ~60 words, all before the main verb vió, whose object follows it. C = the absolutes precede the main verb and the order is kept. |
| B7 | P6 | contrastaban … las oscuras cavidades de los ojos — subject after its verb and after its complement. C = verb precedes subject. |
| B8 | P8 | Anaphora: era el rumor … era el zumbido … era el monótono ruido, three clauses opening identically. C = the three openings are identical in English too. |
| B9 | P8 | Polysyndeton: y la gota de agua …, y el grito del buho …, y el roce de los reptiles. C = every and kept, no comma substituted. |
| B10 | P8 | algo más … algo más repeated, and gigante … gigantes repeated within one clause. C = both repetitions kept. |
Registered, mechanical, and computed before dispatch
Separately from this census, and not translator-coded, four elaboration statistics are computed
on the two renderings by script: token count, mean word length in characters, mean sentence length
in tokens, and the share of tokens carrying a Latinate suffix (-tion, -sion, -ity, -ous,
-ance, -ence, -ate, -ment, -al, -ure, -ial). These are the registered predictor for
the elevation hypothesis and stand in the design, not here.
