Copy-text and collation — «المقامة الصنعانية»
The copy-text
ar.wikisource.org, «مقامات الحريري/المقامة الصنعانية», fetched 2026-08-24 via action=raw
(HTTP 200, 8,397 bytes). Public domain: al-Ḥarīrī died 1122. The transcription is fully vocalised
from «فدَخَلْتُها» onward and punctuated at every saj' colon boundary, which is what makes the
139-colon segmentation in source-arwikisource-maqama1.txt a reading of the page rather than a
judgement of the lead's.
Stored as source-arwikisource-maqama1.txt, one record per line, ID<TAB>FORM<TAB>text.
The collation, and why there is not one
This copy-text is single-witness, and the attempt to find a second failed. Four sources were tried:
| witness | outcome |
|---|---|
ar.wikisource api.php (a second transcription, a فهرس: scan-backed index) |
HTTP 429 to this container on the API; only action=raw on named pages answers |
archive.org pdfarabic_120 — مقامات الحريري, المطبعة البهية, 1313 AH / 1896 |
OCR unusable. Lithographed naskh; the string «صنعاء» does not occur anywhere in 137,092 characters of output |
archive.org maqmtofhar00simi — Jarrett 1882, an Arabic text edition for examinations |
no Arabic in the OCR (518 KB of text, «صنعاء» absent) |
| al-maktaba.org | HTTP 403 to this container |
Both nineteenth-century printings that are in this session's hands — Preston 1850 and Chappelow
1767 print the Arabic alongside their English — were not opened, because opening them at
Assembly I is exactly the priming that loci-frozen.md §7 exists to bound. A witness bought at the
cost of the study's independence is not a witness.
So the limit is declared, as RS-20260822c §9 declared the same limit for the Gulistan: the
Arabic of this maqāma rests on one transmission. The substitute check is the one used there —
after the census, read the three hands for a place where a hand's English implies a different
Arabic bearer than the copy-text prints. That is weak evidence, because three translators are not
three editions, and it is reported as weak.
What the copy-text's own shape already tells the study
137 of the 139 prose cola sit inside a saj' locus. The two that do not are «ثمّ أنْشَدَ:» and
«أنْشَد:» — then he recited — six words in total. This is why loci-frozen.md §4 has to build its
control out of a chance rate: al-Ḥarīrī's plain prose is not scarce in this maqāma, it is absent.
