The translation
S1
The stranger alone seemed again quite calm and composed, she spoke to Berthold: "The misfortune went by, the storm too has its time, so much the fairer will the stillness be, in which each perceives how much remained to him." — "We must use the storm, in order to draw away," spoke the master builder after some looking-about in the front rooms, "I have bespoken the horses, our watch has run off, each to his own, let them hold me for a sorcerer, because I use the violence of nature for a good sign."
S2
— But the stranger declared firmly that she would stay; if she renounce her claims, she would find protection and quiet sojourn with the beloved son, she would no longer let herself be driven up like the foliage in the storm by opposed violences, she would rest on the earth and soon also in the earth. — The master builder made her soft representations, but she declined it all, then he took with deep earnestness a chain from his neck, which he wore of hers, tore it apart and gave it back to the stranger. She reached him the hand to the kiss, he knelt a longer time silent before her. The carriage rolled before the house, he left mother and son with silence.
S3
Him followed the most of the people whom the stranger had until then treated as hers, the painter Sixt too, whose art had often bound itself to her in help. She wept up, the dear stranger, as the carriage rolled in the storm: "I have lost a friend," said she, "but you I cannot lose, my son, lead me into your house to the faithful souls who watched your youth, the storm sinks the wings, it has fulfilled what it should, and the scattered cloud-lambkins gather themselves quietly to one another again; it needs the whole violence and shaking of the earth-element, in order to give to the spirit its freedom.
S4
I was caught from within and outwardly watched by my enemies, the storm has shaken off all chains and I thank Heaven that the destruction, in which this house too swayed, has created me a new confidence." — Berthold begged the violently moved mother to calm herself, to leave the mouldering little house and to enter into the secure house, which he had founded and built up to earthly eternal duration. She spoke still with her servants, then he led her down onto the street.
S5
There fluttered him a veil into the eyes, which had stayed hanging on an iron sign-hook. Was it Apollonia's veil? Perhaps her last greeting that was to become his. He dared it not to take it with him, however much it lusted him after it, for he had been strictly warned by Berthold against every theft; but he looked round after the veil as long as it was possible to him, as were it the beloved, and when it had wholly vanished to the eye, there he stood already in the nearness of his house.
S6
And now the care straitened him, how Frau Hildegard would receive his mother, she did not agree with other women and had therefore no intercourse. "She loves me," thought he at last, "she will love the mother too."
S7
"God's blessing over you, dear son," cried Frau Hildegard toward him, "just now Master Fingerling brings the news that our good, old tower has fallen together at the storm, just as a carriage with a stranger had driven out; there I would have died away and rotted away in my sins like the new tower-warden, if you had not led me into the new house." "There are signs and wonders," cried the stranger. — "Whom lead you me into the house?" asked Frau Hildegard. — "The mother who has borne me," said Berthold, "I lead to the mother who preserved my life; embrace one another, you dear mothers, love one another for my sake, that I may embrace, love, honour you both together as one mother."
S8
— Frau Hildegard blessed the hour in which that one had borne Berthold, the stranger blessed the steps on which she had ascended into the house that embraced all that she still loved on earth, the son and his faithful fosterers. There sank both women tenderly into one another's arms, and Berthold pressed both inwardly to one another and rejoiced quietly at this uniting. The house and the stair were still strewn with flowers from the celebration of the entry, Apollonia's lamb had run after Berthold unnoticed, because he had carried it, and joined itself to him, as if it knew something of his happiness. The curious workmen who looked in at the door took off the caps involuntarily and folded the hands, they found themselves reminded by this putting-together of a painting of the Waiblingen church.
Translator's log
Written as the draft was written and frozen with it (R08 §Procedure 4, 6). Decisions and
alternatives, not quality claims. Coverage codes per R07 §5, imported by R08: D decided by
a rule, P permitted by rules that do not choose, S silent — no rule bears. A site is logged
only where two or more renderings were live at the moment of writing.
The two rules that did most of the work
R2 (clause order and period length) and R5 (do not supply what the source withholds) decide most
of this passage, because Arnim's German runs comma-spliced clauses where English wants either a
semicolon or a new sentence, and English wants connectives that the German leaves out. Wherever
R06 broke a period, this arm did not.
The logged sites
| # | seg | site | live options | chosen | code |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | S1 | «schien … composed, she spoke» | semicolon / full stop / comma splice | comma splice | D R2, R1 |
| 2 | S1 | «um fort zu ziehen» | to get away / in order to draw away | in order to draw away | D R2, R6 |
| 3 | S1 | «nach einigem Umschauen» | after looking about him / after some looking-about | after some looking-about | D R6 |
| 4 | S1 | «ich habe die Pferde bestellt» | ordered / bespoken | bespoken | D R3 — the German verb is the ordinary one, but bespoken is the English whose dated sense (order in advance) is the one meant, which is R3's second clause exactly |
| 5 | S1 | «für einen Zauberer halten» | take me for / hold me for | hold me for | D R6 |
| 6 | S1 | «als ein gutes Zeichen» | sign / omen | for a good sign | D R6 — omen is the domestic equivalent; sign is the word |
| 7 | S2 | «wenn sie ihren Ansprüchen entsage» | indicative if she gave up / subjunctive if she renounce | if she renounce | D R3 — the German is a reported subjunctive and the English one is dated |
| 8 | S2 | «ruhigen Aufenthalt» | a quiet dwelling / quiet sojourn | quiet sojourn | P R3, R6 — both satisfy; sojourn taken |
| 9 | S2 | «wie das Laub im Sturme» | like a leaf / like the foliage | like the foliage | D R6 — the idiom like a leaf in the storm is the domestic equivalent and R6 forbids preferring it |
| 10 | S2 | «von entgegengesetzten Gewalten» | by forces pulling against each other / by opposed violences | by opposed violences | D R6, R5 — and Gewalt is held to one English word across the passage (S1 violence of nature, S3 the whole violence, here violences), which R6 wants and which unforced English would vary |
| 11 | S2 | «machte ihr leise Vorstellungen» | put his objections to her gently / made her soft representations | made her soft representations | D R6 |
| 12 | S2 | «die er von ihr trug» | given him by her / which he wore of hers | which he wore of hers | D R4 — the German is open between given by her and belonging to her, and of hers is open in the same two ways |
| 13 | S2 | «Sie reichte ihm die Hand zum Kusse» | held out her hand to be kissed / reached him the hand to the kiss | the latter | D R2, R6, R5 — the definite articles are the source's |
| 14 | S2 | «mit Schweigen» | without a word / with silence | with silence | D R6 |
| 15 | S3 | «Ihm folgten die meisten» | Most of the people followed him / Him followed the most of the people | the latter | D R2 — fronted dative; English permits the inversion and will not choose it |
| 16 | S3 | «Sie weinte auf» | she wept aloud / she burst into tears / she wept up | she wept up | D R6 — the separable prefix is inceptive and wept up calques it; R9 was consulted here and wept up was judged short of the incomprehensible |
| 17 | S3 | «der Sturm senkt die Flügel» | is lowering its wings / sinks the wings | sinks the wings | D R2, R5 — present for present, article for article |
| 18 | S3 | «Wolkenschäflein» | little clouds / fleecy clouds / cloud-lambkins | cloud-lambkins | D R6 — the diminutive compound calqued whole. This is the single site where the two arms diverge most: R06 has the scattered little clouds and drops the image |
| 19 | S3 | «es bedarf» | it takes / it needs | it needs | D R6 |
| 20 | S4 | «hat mir … geschaffen» | has given me / has created me | has created me | D R6, R2 — the dative kept in place |
| 21 | S4 | «zu irdisch ewiger Dauer» | unpacked into a clause / to earthly eternal duration | to earthly eternal duration | D R6, R5 — the contradiction stands as a phrase and is not explained |
| 22 | S4 | «das morsche Häuschen» | crumbling / mouldering | mouldering | P R3, R6 |
| 23 | S5 | «Da flatterte ihm ein Schleier in die Augen» | There a veil fluttered into his eyes / There fluttered him a veil into the eyes | the latter | D R2, R5 — verb-second and the ethical dative both kept |
| 24 | S5 | «Er wagte es nicht» | He did not dare / He dared it not | He dared it not | D R2, R5 — the German's expletive es is not deleted |
| 25 | S5 | «so sehr es ihn gelüstete» | however much he wanted to / however much it lusted him after it | the latter | D R6, R5 — the impersonal construction calqued |
| 26 | S5 | the textual crux «von Berthold gewarnt» | emend / neutralise / render as it stands | render as it stands | S — no rule bears. Identical in the 1857 witness, so Arnim's. R5 is adjacent (it forbids supplying an antecedent) but the question here is whether to correct the author, and no numbered rule speaks to it |
| 27 | S5 | «in der Nähe seines Hauses» | close to his own house / in the nearness of his house | the latter | D R6 |
| 28 | S6 | «beengte ihn die Sorge» | he was oppressed by the worry / the care straitened him | the latter | D R6, R2 |
| 29 | S6 | «hatte daher keinen Umgang» | kept no company / had therefore no intercourse | the latter | D R6, R3 — intercourse in the dated sense, which is R3's second clause; R9 consulted, and the modern collision was judged marked rather than parodic |
| 30 | S6 | «sie wird auch die Mutter lieben» | my mother / the mother | the mother | D R5 — the source does not say my |
| 31 | S7 | «Segen über dich» | blessing on you / blessing over you | over | D R6 |

| 33 | S7 | «hingestorben und verdorben» | died and rotted / died away and rotted away | died away and rotted away | D R8, R6 — the rhyming pair is replaced by a repeated particle, which is the nearest formal equivalent English affords |
| 34 | S7 | «Türmer» | tower-keeper / watchman / Türmer | tower-warden | P R7, R6 — R7 would license the German word; the compound was calqued instead, and both satisfy |
| 35 | S7 | «Wen führst du mir ins Haus?» | Whom are you bringing me into the house? / Whom lead you me into the house? | the latter | D R2 — inversion kept |
| 36 | S8 | «Da sanken beide Frauen» | Then the two women sank / There sank both women | the latter | D R2 |
| 37 | S8 | «drückte beide innig aneinander» | pressed them close together / pressed both inwardly to one another | the latter | D R6 |
| 38 | S8 | «nahmen … die Mützen ab und falteten die Hände» | their caps … their hands / the caps … the hands | the | D R5 — the German has no possessive |

The two rules that were considered and NOT applied, with reasons
- R7 and the pronoun of address. German du is a form of address English lacks, and R7 says to retain forms of address unassimilated. The unassimilated English is thou / thee / thy. It was not taken. R3 licenses archaism where the source word is itself dated, and dich is not dated German; so R3 does not reach it, and R7's list — names, institutions, measures, forms of address — is a list of culture-bound particulars, not of grammatical categories. Blanket thou-ing an 1817 text would also have run at R9, the limit against the parodic. The whole passage is therefore you, and this is the largest single restraint the rule set imposed on itself.
- R7 and the guillemets. Retaining the source's »…« was live under a wide reading of R7 and was rejected on the same ground: punctuation is not a culture-bound particular in R7's sense, and the effect would have been a typographic tell rather than a translation choice.
R10 was not invoked
No site in this passage was rendered under R10 (abusive fidelity). The regime page names R10 as the rule that can absorb anything and asks that its use be visible; here its count is zero, and the D rate above therefore does not contain an R10 residue.
