Source — «حافظ» غزل ۱۷۶، «سحرم دولت بیدار به بالین آمد»

Witness: Ganjoor, Qazvini–Ghani text of the Divan of Hafez, https://api.ganjoor.net/api/ganjoor/poem?url=/hafez/ghazal/sh176, fetched 2026-08-30 (S234). Public domain (Hafez, d. c. 1390). Raw JSON preserved at workshop/experiments/E-20260830b-rhyme-family/materials/sh176.json and at runs/RS-20260830b-rhyme-family/ganjoor/sh176.json.

No second Persian witness was collated. Ganjoor exposes one text and no free second witness of the Divan was reachable at S231, S233 or here; this is a stated limit, not a collation.

Why this poem, and how it was chosen

Not by the translator. E-20260830b-rhyme-family §8 froze a selection rule before any coverage figure existed: from the 495-ghazal census, the radif-bearing ghazals of 7–9 bayts that are neither Walter Leaf's twenty-eight nor already rendered by this project — 215 of them — drawn at even index intervals, and cut to the first twelve of that frozen order by the budget rule. Stage F then measured available coverage A on all twelve from the Persian alone, and select.py printed the slug of the lowest, and nothing else.

sh176 is that poem. It is the ghazal whose rhyme-bearing senses the measure says English can least easily gather into one rhyme.

A blinding breach, recorded rather than buried. Design §8 says the selection script prints the chosen slug and nothing else. It does — but the translator had already seen this ghazal's A value (0.111) and one matched word (bedside) in a dry run of the analysis code, before the selection existed and before any outcome data existed. So the translator knew, going in, that the measure called this poem hard. The translation limb is not evidence for anything under critic-response.md A5, which is what contains the damage; the breach is stated here and in the result page's limits and is not to be argued away.

The form, read off the source

8 bayts, 16 hemistichs. Rhyming positions by the frozen census rule: hemistich 1 plus every second hemistich thereafter — 9 positions.

The nine senses the Persian places at its rhyme, in order: pillow / bedside · Shirin, the name, punning on sweet · manner, fashion, guise · musky · wretched, poor · falcon · this · eglantine, wild rose · sweet herbs, fragrant plants.
