T-cavalleria-rusticana-R21-v1 — Verga, «Cavalleria rusticana» ¶50–81, vulgarisation

Role in the design. RS-20260806b measured Berman's register axis on five English renderings of this passage and every one of them sat at or above zero — the two Victorians at +0.833 and +0.583, the foreignising control at +0.500, the unbriefed machine at −0.083. Berman's axis has two poles and only one of them was occupied. This arm occupies the other, under R21, whose rules were frozen before a word of it was written.

Alfio came back with his mules, loaded with cash, and brought his wife a nice new dress for the holidays.

— You're right to bring her presents, Santa next door told him, because while you're away your wife does the place up for you!

Alfio was one of those carters who wear the cap over one ear, and hearing his wife talked about like that he went the colour of a knifed man. — Christ almighty! he said, if you haven't got this right I'll leave you no eyes to cry with, you and your whole lot!

— Crying's not my line, said Santa. I didn't cry even when I saw Nunzia's Turiddu going into your wife's house at night, with these eyes.

— Right, said Alfio. Thanks a lot.

Now the cat was back Turiddu kept off the lane in the daytime, and killed the boredom at the bar with his mates; and the night before Easter they had a plate of sausage on the table. When Alfio came in, Turiddu knew just from the way he put his eyes on him that he'd come about that business, and set his fork down on his plate.

— Anything you want off me, Alfio? he said.

— No favours, Turiddu. It's been a while, and I wanted a word about that thing you know about.

Turiddu had pushed a glass at him first off, but Alfio waved it away. So Turiddu got up and said:

— I'm here, Alfio.

The carter threw his arms round his neck.

— If you want to come out to the cactus at Canziria in the morning we can talk about that business.

— Wait for me on the main road at sun-up and we'll go together.

With that they swapped the kiss of challenge. Turiddu got the carter's ear between his teeth, and that was his word he'd turn up.

His mates had left the sausage without a word, and they walked Turiddu home. Nunzia, poor woman, sat up for him late every night.

— Ma, Turiddu said to her, remember when I went for a soldier and you thought I wasn't coming back? Give us a kiss like you did then, because I'm going a long way in the morning.

Before it was light he got his flick-knife, the one he'd stuck under the hay when he was called up, and set off for the cactus at Canziria.

— Oh God! where are you off to in such a rush? Lola whined, scared, while her husband was on his way out.

— Not far, said Alfio, but it'd be better for you if I didn't come back.

Lola, in her shift, prayed at the foot of the bed, pressing to her lips the beads Brother Bernardino had brought her from the Holy Land, and said all the Hail Marys that would go in.

— Alfio, Turiddu started, when they'd done a stretch of road together and the other one said nothing with his cap down over his eyes. God's truth, I know I'm in the wrong and I'd let you kill me. But before I came out I saw my old woman, up to watch me go, making out she had to see to the chickens, like her heart was telling her something, and God's truth I'll kill you like a dog so my old woman doesn't have to cry.

— That suits me, said Alfio, getting his jacket off, and we'll both hit hard.

They were both handy. Turiddu took the first one and got it on his arm in time; when he gave it back he gave it back good, and went for the groin.

— Ah, Turiddu! you really mean to kill me!

— Yes, I told you. Now I've seen my old woman with the chickens I can't get her out of my head.

— Get your eyes open, then! Alfio shouted at him, because I'm about to give you back good measure.

Being on guard all hunched up to keep his left on the wound, which hurt, and near dragging his elbow on the ground, he grabbed a handful of dirt quick and threw it in the other man's eyes.

— Ah! Turiddu yelled, blinded, I'm dead.

He tried to get out of it, jumping back like mad, but Alfio got him with another one in the stomach and a third in the throat.

— And three! that's for the place you did up for me. Now your mother can leave the hens alone.

Turiddu floundered a bit this way and that among the cactus and then dropped like a stone. The blood was frothing and gurgling in his throat and he couldn't even get out: — Ah, mum!

Translator's log

Frozen 2026-08-06, before E-20260806g-berman-negative-pole/design.md was written and before any coding call was dispatched. Decisions and alternatives, not quality claims. Coverage codes per R21 §5b: P predicted by the rule set · D deviation, with reason · INT decided by interpretation · L a loss the rule set caused. Any evaluative sentence carries internal-judgment-only; none is a claim about how good this is.

The one thing that was harder than expected

Going down is not the same operation as going up, and the asymmetry is lexical. English has a deep, well-stocked shelf of words that raise — wont, ere, thereupon, bade, countenance — and every one of them is available in narration as well as in speech. The shelf that lowers is almost entirely dialogue-shaped: ain't, bloke, nicked, reckon, bust. Rule V1 applies to narration too, and in narration there was frequently nothing below neutral to reach for. What I found myself doing instead was not swapping words but removing them — cutting the connective, the adverb, the second half of a doublet — so that the narration went down by getting barer rather than by getting slangier. Whether a reader registers bareness as low register or as something else is not mine to say (internal-judgment-only).

That is a fact about English that I did not know before doing this, and it has a consequence for Berman: ennoblissement can be done by lexis alone, and its supposed twin cannot.

Register decisions (V1, V2, V5, V6)

site Italian chosen live alternative code
¶2 vi adorna la casa does the place up for you decorates your house for you (neutral); is doing your house up P V5 — a current English idiom that carries the same sneer, and one that survives the network (see below)
¶3 Santo diavolone! Christ almighty! A thousand devils!; Holy hell!; leaving Santo diavolone P V6. Current profanity, no pious archaism
¶3 parentado your whole lot your kindred; your relations; your family P V2 + V5. parentado is a social unit English has no word for; lot is the flattest thing that keeps it a unit
¶4 Non son usa a piangere Crying's not my line I'm not used to crying; I'm not one for crying P V1, V5. This is the register site: Berman's own example-shape
¶4 gnà Nunzia Nunzia Mistress Nunzia; gnà Nunzia P V2, and a declared L — the honorific is gone and with it the fact that Nunzia has a social station
¶6 osteria the bar the tavern; the inn; osteria P V2
¶6 cogli amici with his mates with his friends; with the lads P V1
¶6 sul desco on the table on the board; on the trestle P V1. desco is already slightly archaic in Verga; V1 forbids following it up
¶7 Avete comandi da darmi Anything you want off me Have you any orders for me; Anything I can do for you P V1, V5. INT as well: I read the formula as offered service under threat, and off me keeps the threat where for you loses it
¶8 Nessuna preghiera No favours No prayers; No requests; Nothing to ask P V1 + declared L — Verga's preghiera is request and prayer, and Lola is at the foot of the bed saying Hail Marys thirty lines later. No favours closes the polysemy dead. R08 rule 4 would have kept it open; R21 has no such rule and I did not smuggle one in
¶12, ¶17, ¶31 fichidindia the cactus prickly pears; the prickly-pear grove; fichidindia P V2 + V3. Two words become one and the Sicilian is gone
¶16 Datemi un bel bacio Give us a kiss Give me a fine kiss; Give me a good kiss P V1. British colloquial us for me; the lowest thing available at the most tender moment in the passage
¶18 Gesummaria! Oh God! Jesus, Mary!; Gesummaria; Sweet Jesus! P V2, V6
¶20 il rosario the beads the rosary P V1. Beads is the domestic, unecclesiastical word
¶20 fra Bernardino Brother Bernardino fra Bernardino; Friar Bernardino P V2. Friar is above the source's level in current English; Brother is not
¶22 farsetto jacket doublet; jerkin; waistcoat P V1, V2
¶31 cadde come un masso dropped like a stone fell like a boulder; went down like a rock P V5 — the domestic idiom, not the source's image
¶31 Ah, mamma mia! Ah, mum! Ah, mother!; Oh, mamma mia!; Ah, my mother! P V2, V6. This is the lowest choice in the passage and the one I was least willing to make, which is why it is recorded first among the things V8 was consulted on (below)

Where V4 (withhold) bit, and where it agreed with R08

The two signifying networks (Verga's, not Berman's)

Both were tracked deliberately, because RS-20260806b measured them by machine and found one surviving in every arm and the other in only one.

The diminutive gradient — the loss the previous log predicted, taken again

la mia vecchia … la mia vecchierella (¶21). English has no productive diminutive and R21 has no rule that would buy one; my old woman stands in both positions, flat, with the gradient gone. Coded L. This is the same loss T-cavalleria-rusticana-R04-v1 recorded eight sessions ago, and RS-20260806b §8 found it was the one declared loss of three that readers of the English did not recover. Recording it again, from a different regime, so that the second instance is on the record before anything is measured: a regime change did not touch it. Whether the coders find it this time is not something this log may predict past what it has just said.

V7 check (clause-by-clause, done before freezing)

Every event, participant and speech act walked against the Italian. Three places where a fact could be argued to have moved, all recorded rather than repaired:

  1. ¶4 — con questi occhi moved to the end of Santa's sentence (with these eyes) rather than its middle, for V3. No fact changes; the emphasis lands later.
  2. ¶6 — non bazzicava più di giorno per la stradicciuola → kept off the lane in the daytime. The Italian's più ("no longer") is carried by Now the cat was back, not by a separate word. P V3, but it is a fact carried by implicature rather than stated, and it is named here.
  3. ¶3 — cambiò di colore come se l'avessero accoltellato → went the colour of a knifed man. The simile becomes a genitive; the comparison is intact, the clause is gone. P V3.

Nothing is omitted and nothing is added. No participant, no blow, no line of dialogue.

V3 (contract) — missed, and the miss is recorded rather than repaired

V3 asks for English no longer than the Italian in tokens. Measured with the same tokenizer E-20260806b/analysis/machine.py used on all five S118 arms:

English 773 tokens against the Italian's 740 — 1.0446×. V3 is not met. Coded D.

I wrote "well under" in my head while translating and the count says otherwise, which is the reason the rule was made numerical. The miss was not repaired, and the reason is that repairing it would have been dishonest in a specific way: the remaining slack I could find was all in locatives, adverbs and the second halves of doublets that V7 protects, so getting below 740 meant either omitting content or trimming to hit a number after seeing the number. Both are worse than a missed rule.

What the miss is evidence of is worth more than the rule was. At S118 the five arms ran 1.120× to 1.205×, and the result page recorded that "nobody wrote English shorter than the Italian," with the foreignising control the longest of all. This arm was written under an explicit contraction rule by a translator trying to get under 1.000, and it still came out longer than the source. Berman's allongement has now survived a regime built to reverse it. This arm is the shortest of the six by a margin — 7% below the next shortest — and it is still expansion.

Whether contraction of this size is visible to a reader is what the run this arm was made for will find out, and this log does not guess.

V8 (stop short of parody) — what it vetoed

Consulted four times; it changed three choices.

  1. Ah, mamma mia! → Ah, mum! — allowed. Mummy was live and was refused: it makes a twenty-year-old knife-fighter a child and turns the line comic, which V8 forbids.
  2. Santo diavolone! — Bloody hell! was live and refused as too regionally English; the passage cannot become a Cockney story, which is a different deformation from the one under test. Christ almighty! is low and geographically neutral.
  3. bacio della sfida — the kiss of challenge kept, though it is above R21's level. Coded D, a deviation from V1, with reason: the gesture is a named Sicilian institution and every low English paraphrase available (they shook on it, sealed it) destroys the fact that a ritual is happening, which V7 forbids. V7 outranks V1 and this is the only site where they collided.
  4. compare — dropping it everywhere was checked against V7 and allowed: it is an address form, not a participant, and the participants are all named. Coded P V2 with the honorific loss already declared above.

What this log deliberately does not say

It does not say whether the rendering is good, whether it is lower than the others, or what any reader will make of it. Those are the run's to answer, blind, with authorship stripped and the arm mixed with three it cannot be told from by provenance (charter §5).
