T-black-cat-R04-v3 — Edgar Allan Poe, "The Black Cat" (1843), the remainder — the work is now whole in one hand
Pair. English → Japanese. R04-v1 (S038) rendered ¶14–20, the second cat's arc; R04-v2
(S063) rendered ¶4–9, Pluto's. This renders ¶1–3, 10–13 and 21–30: the confession's opening, the
fire and the figure in the plaster, and the whole of the ending — the axe, the cellar wall, the
police, the voice from the tomb. 2,146 source words of a 3,848-word story; with the two earlier
spans the thirty paragraphs are now complete in a single hand.
Source. Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849), "The Black Cat," Saturday Evening Post, 19 August 1843.
Public domain. Text as stored at wiki/base/anchors/A-baudelaire-chat-noir/black-cat-poe-1843.txt
(Project Gutenberg #2148, retrieved 2026-07-24, S013). Its text-witness caveat falls inside this
span: the stored file reads "made to resemble the red of the cellar" at ¶24 where other editions
read "the rest of the cellar". See log §D.
Regime. R04 (lead-close), as v1 and v2, and the same declared purpose: a reading edition in
modern literary Japanese — である narration, first person 私, 新字新仮名, 漢語 where Poe is
Latinate and 和語 where he drops to the Germanic floor, deliberately not the prewar 翻訳調 that
the only free published Japanese rendering is written in.
Contamination: high — declared on measurement, not on suspicion
v1 and v2 both declared suspected and both measured above their own reference cells:
R04-v1 against Sasaki gives a longest common run of 16 characters with 82 shared 7-grams;
R04-v2 gives 17 with 86 — against reference cells (same translator on other content; one
author on other content) at 8 and 9. The lead's Japanese is closer to Sasaki than Sasaki is
to himself elsewhere.
This span is worse, and the reason is stated rather than discovered later. In building the
corpus for E-20260812b the lead read Sasaki's ¶1–6 in Japanese, including his opening sentence,
before translating. The declaration is therefore high and no measurement is needed to justify
it — one is taken anyway, after the freeze, and appended below.
The consequence, written into the design (E-20260812b §4): the lead is not an independent
second Japanese hand and no figure in this run treats it as one. What the artifact is for is the
one thing the two published hands cannot supply — a written record of the decision at each of the
source's emphasis marks, and a prediction sealed before any count.
Translator's log
Frozen with the span, before any emphasis statistic over any witness existed. Decisions and alternatives, not quality claims.
§A — the seven emphasis marks in this span, one entry each
Poe italicises seven spans in ¶1–3, 10–13 and 21–30. Each entry says what was done and why. They were decided one at a time while translating, before the design's type coding was written and before any count.
| ¶ | Poe | what I did | why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | _barroques_ |
no mark; rendered as カタカナ「バロック」 | The italic here does not say stress this, it says this word is foreign. Japanese has a script whose whole job is that, and katakana was already doing it. A 傍点 on top would have added a stress Poe does not ask for. The mark is not carried and nothing is lost — the function moved to the writing system. |
| 2 | _Man_ |
marked, and 〈〉 for the capital: 〈人間〉 | Two devices at once in the source (capital + italic) and two in the target (the project's 〈〉 convention for Poe's personified abstractions, plus 傍点). Stress: the sentence's whole force is the contrast between the brute and Man. |
| 3 | _a cat_ |
marked: _一匹の猫_ |
The joke of the list — birds, gold-fish, a dog, rabbits, a monkey, and a cat. Drop the mark and the sentence is an inventory. |
| 11 | _bas relief_ |
no mark; rendered 浮彫 | Same class as barroques — foreign, not stressed — but here the compensation was not available: 浮彫 is ordinary 漢語 and carries no foreignness at all. レリーフ was live and rejected as anachronistic in this register. This one is a real loss and I record it as one. |
| 11 | _cat_ |
marked: 巨大な_猫_の形 |
Stress, and the story's hinge: it is the cat, of all things, that the plaster has kept. |
| 12 | _ammonia_ |
no mark; アンモニア | As ¶1: the italic marks a technical/foreign term and katakana does that job. |
| 28 | _excellently_ |
marked: _みごとに_よくできた家 |
Stress, and the murderer's fatal flourish. The whole ending turns on his adding one word too many. |
Four of seven marked, three not, and all three unmarked ones are the foreign-word italic. Whether that pattern holds across the two spans I translated in earlier sessions, when this question had not been asked, I do not know — see §C.
§B — where the work actually was, and it was not the marks
- ¶24's 「まがいの煙突」. The stored witness reads "made to resemble the red of the cellar",
which is corrupt; the reading is "the rest of the cellar", and Baudelaire's French («le reste de
la cave») is the project's own evidence for that. I translated the corrected reading
(「地下室のほかの部分と見分けのつかぬように」) and record the departure here rather than
silently.
E-20260812bbuilds nothing on this line. - ¶29's syntax. Poe's sentence is one 60-word cascade of appositions — a howl—a wailing shriek, half of horror and half of triumph, such as might have arisen only out of hell, conjointly from the throats of… Japanese cannot hold an appositive tail that long after its head. I broke it once, at the dash before 「地獄からのみ」, and paid for the break by repeating 悲鳴. The repetition is mine and is not in Poe.
- ¶28's politeness. English has no grammatical politeness and the narrator's address to the police is his last performance of respectability. Japanese forces the choice: I used ですます with 〜ましてな, 〜てね, so the register itself does the work Poe gets from the mannered vocabulary ("I delight to have allayed your suspicions"). This is an addition the source cannot license and the target cannot refuse — the C1 pattern the two earlier spans were chosen to test.
- ¶25 「そうだ、…眠ったのだ!」 for aye, slept even with the burden of murder upon my soul! 「そうだ」 is a weaker archaism than aye; 「然り」 was live and was rejected as a register Poe's narrator does not otherwise use in my rendering.
- ¶27 「筋一つ震わせなかった」 for I quivered not in a muscle — the negative-emphatic inversion is unavailable and 一つ…ぬ is the nearest thing Japanese offers.
§C — the sealed prediction (P5 of E-20260812b §5)
Written before any count of any witness's emphasis marks existed, and committed in this state. Nothing in this section may be revised after the count; it will be answered, not amended.
I have read my own two earlier spans as prose while checking the register, and I have not tallied a single mark in them. Over the whole of my Japanese "The Black Cat" — all thirty paragraphs, v1 and v2 and this span together — I predict:
P5a— I carried a mark at more than 70% of Poe's italic sites. My rendering is a close one and I do not think I dropped the channel.P5b— every site where I dropped the mark is aFOREIGN-typed italic; I dropped noSTRESSitalic anywhere in the story.P5c— I added no emphasis mark of my own anywhere: the count of my marks with no Poe italic in the same paragraph is zero.P5d— my total mark count across the story is within two of Poe's total.
P5b and P5c are the ones I would bet on and are therefore the ones worth registering. The
S163 precedent is the reason for writing any of this down: a translator who had just finished a text
and was asked what his own punctuation had done got the sign wrong on the only mark that moved,
while being exactly right about everything he had kept.
§D — what a reader of this artifact must not do with it
- It is not an independent second Japanese hand (see the contamination declaration above).
- Its 傍点 are
_span_in this file, the corpus-wide convention; the file is not a typeset text and the placement of Japanese sesame dots on a printed page is not represented here. - Every evaluative sentence in this log is
internal-judgment-only, and the lead never judges its own translation.
