熱い砂の上 — the C1 device set, declared before translating

R29 rule C1. This table was written and committed before the first sentence of the translation was rendered, which is the ordering the regime turns on: a device set assembled after translating describes what the translator happened to do rather than constraining what he may do.

Paragraph numbers index the non-empty lines of source.txt, zero-based, as printed by analysis/paras.py.

Class A — form-only. Each site is carried in the R29 arm and flattened in the R14 arm. Removing the device changes nothing the text says; that is the test for membership, and a site that fails it belongs in Class B.

Class B — image-bearing or referential. Held byte-identical between the two arms. Not available to R29's rule set (C5) and not touched by R14's operators.

Class A1 — dash-suspension (――)

Makino ends utterances and clauses on a dash and leaves them unresolved. The device is a refusal of closure: the speaker trails, or the narrative swerves without a connective.

Carried (R29): keep the suspension, using the English dash and the unresolved clause. Flattened (R14): complete the sentence, or supply the connective the dash withholds, or close with a full stop. (R14 F6 connective explicitation, F9 closure.)

Class A2 — reduplicated mimetic adverb (ADV/\と)

Carried (R29): an English resource that enacts the same iterated manner — a sound-symbolic verb, an iterated participle, or a doubled adverb — chosen so that the English is unmarked. C2 forbids romanising the mimetic, which is the standard exponent-import and would be an immediate FAILED. Flattened (R14): generic verb plus a stated manner adverb (R14 F4).

Class A3 — reduplication in direct speech

The source doubles or triples a word inside an utterance, marked with /\ or written out. It is insistence, not information.

Carried (R29): keep the doubling in English. Flattened (R14): state it once (R14 F3).

Class A4 — the keyword held to one word

The story is built on one adjective. 熱い (hot to the touch) recurs; 暑い/暑さ (hot weather) is a different word and stays different — collapsing them would be a content change, not a flattening. 焦け (scorched) is a third.

Carried (R29): one English word for the 熱 family throughout, one for the 暑 family, one for 焦け, each repeated without variation. Flattened (R14): vary the English word at each occurrence (R14 F3), holding the sense.

Class A5 — the piled period

A single sentence in which circumstantials, manner phrases and subordinate clauses accumulate in front of the main verb, which arrives last and short.

Carried (R29): one English period, the accumulation kept, the verb still arriving late — done with English's own fronting, apposition and participial chaining, not with imported word order (C2). Flattened (R14): broken into separate declaratives in default order (R14 F1).

Class A6 — utterance first, attribution after, standing alone

The source prints the whole utterance, then begins a new paragraph with the quotative と and the attribution, so the attribution is a sentence in its own right and the reader has heard the line before learning who said it.

Carried (R29): keep the attribution as its own following sentence, and keep the delay. Flattened (R14): fold it into an ordinary English dialogue tag inside the quoted line.

Class A7 — the subject withheld, the identifying phrase last

The scene is given before anyone is named; the paragraph closes on an existential (…がゐた, …があつた, …もあつた) that identifies the people we have been watching.

Carried (R29): withhold the identification and land it at the end, in English's own existential or appositive. Flattened (R14): name the subject at the head of the sentence.

Class A total: 84 sites in seven classes.

Class B — held byte-identical between the two arms

Not available to R29 (C5) and not touched by R14.

The rule that makes this a manipulation

The R14 arm is the R29 arm with Class A flattened and nothing else changed. Any string not at a Class A site must be byte-identical between the two files. A committed script asserts it (analysis/checks.py), and a failure of that assertion voids the run's primary rather than being reported as a caveat.
