Opportunity list — d'Annunzio «La fine di Candia» ¶1–24, both R10 targets

R10 §6. Written and committed before either translation was begun, after reading the source unit and both frozen proposition sets. It records whether the source supplies any material on which each proposition could be satisfied or violated at all. It exists so that a proposition found absent from a result for want of material is not confused with one the translator failed to install.

Proposition sets reused verbatim and unaltered from E-20260731f/claims.json (A-mchugh-presence C01–C19; A-mansfield-garden-party M01–M11).

What the source unit is. 800 words: three paragraphs of dense third-person description (a countess, her maid and her laundress putting away silver and linen after Easter), then a discovered theft, then twenty short paragraphs of neighbourhood women's speech in Abruzzese dialect-inflected Italian. The unit is roughly half narration and half unattributed choral dialogue, which is what makes it able to separate the two targets: the narration tests the figuration and vocabulary propositions, the dialogue tests the voice and attribution ones.

A-mchugh-presence — the CENTRE target (C01–C19)

id opportunity note
C01 no archaism YES The source's own 1886 orthography and li altri / su 'l invite archaising English.
C02 no period lexis YES canterani, forzieri, vasellami, mantili, salviette, fédere, sottana are all period household objects.
C03 no era-marking slang YES The women's speech is dialect-marked (signó, Cristí, mo', 'na).
C04 no dialect spelling YES Same material; the temptation is eye-dialect.
C05 no Latinate display YES di forme quasi liturgiche, spandevasi, attendevano all'opera.
C06 free indirect judgment PARTIAL The narration is external for 3 paragraphs; ¶9 (Ella era sicura da ogni sospetto) is the one clear entry into a character's judgment. One site.
C07 third person, one consciousness NO — the source forbids it The narration is third person but not limited to one consciousness: it describes all three women from outside. Recorded as missing (R10 §2): the proposition cannot be satisfied without rewriting the story.
C08 "say" attribution YES gridò, rispose, esclamò, disse, ripeterono — five attributing verbs in the unit, plus twelve unattributed lines.
C09 four figures in 1,511 words NO — quantitative claim about the anchor passage Not a target; an anchor statistic. Recorded as not aimable.
C10 no extended conceits YES una testa d'uccello rapace sopra un collo di testuggine is the unit's one sustained figure.
C11 named particulars for texture YES The whole first third is an inventory.
C12 particulars unglossed YES Ortona, Pescara, la Faina, la Pica, canterani.
C13 very short paragraphs YES ¶20–24 are 3–14 words each.
C14 forty-eight paragraphs / 1,511 words NO — quantitative claim about the anchor passage Not aimable. Same category as C09.
C15 flat obscenity NO There is no obscenity in this unit. Recorded as missing.
C16 contractions everywhere YES
C17 wide sentence-length variation YES 174-word ¶3 against 1-word ¶31.
C18 perceptible narrator, no idiolect YES
C19 no sound or typographic play YES ‟Aaaah!” and ‟Gesù! Gesù!” are the sites where it could be violated.

Aimable: 15 of 19. Missing for want of material: C07, C15. Not aimable at all (quantitative claims about the anchor's own passage): C09, C14. The two not-aimable ones are the same two the E-20260731f critic's BLOCKING finding was about, and their being unaimable here is independent evidence for that finding.

A-mansfield-garden-party — the PERIOD target (M01–M11)

id opportunity note
M01 free indirect discourse PARTIAL ¶9 again, and the women's collective indignation. Two sites.
M02 unattributed exclamations in narration PARTIAL The exclamations in this unit are all in quoted speech; installing one in the narration would be an addition. One marginal site (¶18, il remore del furto si sparse).
M03 self-correction in the character's voice NO No material. Recorded as missing.
M04 contractions in narration YES Directly opposed to nothing in C16; both targets want contractions in speech, and this one wants them in narration too.
M05 colloquial spoken idiom YES Twelve lines of it.
M06 immediate lexical repetition for emphasis YES subito subito is absent here, but ‟Non c'è! Non c'è!”, ‟Maria! Maria!”, ‟Gesù! Gesù!” and the five ‟A me…” lines are all repetition sites.
M07 written-out sound play YES ‟Aaaah!”.
M08 objects date the prose YES The entire linen-and-silver inventory.
M09 dash-driven long sentences against short declaratives YES ¶3 (174 words) against ¶30 (1 word).
M10 one sustained characterised voice YES
M11 structural irony sprung by an overheard cruelty at the close YES — and it is the unit's own shape The unit ends on ¶24, the first named accusation. The story's whole design is that Candia is destroyed by talk.

Aimable: 9 of 11. Missing for want of material: M02 (marginal), M03.
