Alfred's Preface to the Pastoral Care — source text and collation
Base text: James W. Bright, An Anglo-Saxon Reader (public domain), "Alfred's Preface to the Pastoral Care", via English Wikisource, retrieved 2026-07-29. Hatton 20 (Bodl.) with variants from Cotton Tiberius B. xi. Macrons as printed.
Second witness: Henry Sweet, King Alfred's West-Saxon Version of Gregory's Pastoral Care, EETS
o.s. 45 (1871), Hatton text, via archive.org kingalfredswests00greg, OCR. Old English pages only
were read; see the design's §8 for the one incidental exposure to Sweet's English.
alfred-preface-oe-bright.txt is the base text as retrieved. alfred-preface-oe.txt is the text
actually used, with three emendations from the second witness:
| # | Bright (as transcribed on Wikisource) | Sweet 1871 (Hatton) | emendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | lǣre mon siððan furður on Lǣdengeðīodes ǣr ðissum āfeallen wæs |
lære mon siððan furður on Lædengeðiode ða ðe mon furðor læran wille & to hieran hade don wille. Ða ic ða gemunde hu sio lar Lædengeðiodes ær ðissum afeallen wæs |
eighteen words restored. An eyeskip in the transcription, from Lǣdengeðīode to Lǣdengeðīodes, which had merged two sentences into one ungrammatical clause. |
| 2 | ðā bōc endan on Englisc |
ða boc wendan on Englisc |
endan → wendan. The verb is wendan "to turn, translate" — the text's own word for what it is doing, and the one the passage turns on. |
| 3 | ongemang ōðrum mislīcum on manigfealdum bisgum |
ongemang oðrum mislicum & manigfealdum bisgum |
on → ond. |
Macrons supplied to the restored words on Bright's pattern; Sweet does not print them.
This is source-side textual work and no rendering informed it. Emendation 2 is the one that could have been made from memory rather than from a witness, and it was not: the Sweet page was read for it.
