Conventions — schema for this wiki
Established at bootstrap, 2026-08-28 (session slot 1, .cycle=1). Change this file deliberately, with a logged reason in wiki/log.md, not by drift (framework.md §1).
Directories
sources/— project root, sibling ofwiki/. Raw source records: one file per source consulted. Immutable once filed; a correction to a source record is a new dated note appended to that file, never a silent edit of the original extract.wiki/concepts/— the linguistics and academic/philosophical apparatus: lexical gaps, semantic typology, linguistic relativity, the Cassin dictionary tradition, translation theory (Jakobson/Catford/Nida and successors, once ingested).wiki/topics/— the popular phenomenon and cultural politics: the listicle genre, its history and commercial dimension, national-character mythology, exoticization.wiki/words/— one page per celebrated word case study (hygge, saudade, komorebi, etc.): meaning, etymology, dictionary treatment, how the popular gloss compares to evidence, how published translators actually render it.wiki/root —index.md,log.md,conventions.md(this file), and cross-cutting synthesis pages if/when Phase 2 calls for them.journal/— one dated report per session,YYYY-MM-DD.md(suffix-b,-c, … if a day has more than one session).inbox/— owner-drop directory;inbox/archive/for processed items.
Naming
- Files: kebab-case,
.md. Word pages are named for the word itself in its original script/spelling if Latin-alphabet (saudade.md), transliterated if not (romanized form, with the native spelling noted inside the page). - Source files:
{domain-or-outlet}-{author-or-slug}-{year}.mdwhere available (e.g.aeon-amoruso-2018-saudade.md);{domain}-{topic-slug}.mdfor unauthored/tertiary sources (e.g.wikipedia-untranslatability.md).
Page shape
- Source page: title, author, publication, date, URL, type (primary/secondary/tertiary, and a one-clause note on its stance — skeptical, credulous, neutral), accessed date, an Extract section (claims worth reuse, with any exact quotes in quotation marks), a Gaps section when the source visibly leaves something out that the mission asks about, and a Used in section linking to every wiki page the source feeds.
- Concept / topic / word page: every factual claim either cites a source page (a relative markdown link to the file under
sources/) or is explicitly marked(project inference)/(speculation). Disagreements between sources are stated as disagreements, not resolved by picking a favorite. A "Status" line at the top of word-case-study pages will eventually track how the popular gloss holds up once professional translations are checked (not yet done for any word as of this bootstrap — see each page's own note).
Linking
- Relative links throughout, resolvable by
tools/check_links.py. From a page underwiki/<subdir>/to a source file under the project-rootsources/directory, or to another wiki page (a sibling or a page under a differentwiki/<subdir>/) — always a real relative path, never a placeholder.
Provenance and honesty
- Under-claim when a source is thin; say so rather than smoothing it over.
- A claim traced only to a tertiary source (e.g. Wikipedia) is marked as such and flagged for later primary/secondary confirmation rather than presented as settled.
