Extract
Litost/lítost does not appear on this list of established English loanwords from Czech (which includes, among others, robot — from Karel Čapek's 1920s play R.U.R. — polka, howitzer, and slivovice). Used as one further data point (alongside the missing Merriam-Webster and English-Wiktionary entries, the absent OED report, and the Collins "New Word Proposal" — not an established entry) for this project's finding that litost has, on current evidence, achieved no confirmed adoption into English lexicography at all — a stronger negative result than any other word on this project's file.
Gaps
- A list-type tertiary source can omit words for reasons other than non-adoption (incompleteness); this is corroborating, not conclusive, evidence.
