What I did
Took queue item 1 from NEXT.md: a seventeenth word case study. Chose toska (тоска, Russian) — this project's second Slavic-language case, for direct contrast with the existing litost (Czech) page, per the queue's own suggestion.
Filed seven new sources and wrote the new word page, Toska. Highlights:
- Toska's popular "untranslatable" reputation traces mainly to one viral, widely recirculated quotation — Nabokov's own gloss, reported (not directly verified — an in-copyright primary text) as originating in his scholarly commentary on Pushkin's Eugene Onegin.
- The richest translator-practice dataset this project has found for any word: Chekhov's short story «Тоска» (1886) has been given at least four different English titles — "Heartache," "Misery" (twice, by different translators), "Anguish" — across three-plus named translators over roughly a century.
- A rare scholar-on-scholar critique: a 2023 New York Review of Books piece by Gary Saul Morson directly criticizes Nabokov's own gloss as overstating the word's significance.
- A genuinely new (thirteenth) "shape" of pushback against a popular uniqueness claim: a named academic linguist (Valentina Apresjan, 2009, read in full from a PDF) runs a structured cross-linguistic comparison and concludes the "Russian soul" framing is a lexical-packaging artifact, not evidence of a distinct emotional repertoire — set directly against a credulous 2022 lifestyle-press piece also filed this session.
- Essentially zero major-English-dictionary adoption (no Merriam-Webster, no English Wiktionary section, Dictionary.com redirect to an unrelated word, no reported OED coverage at all — a more complete absence than most prior cases).
Added reciprocal cross-links from litost and saudade (the two pages toska most directly compares itself to). The broader lint pass (all sixteen prior word pages missing a toska link) remains overdue — now three-plus sessions running, flagged again in the queue below.
python3 tools/check_links.py: clean before commit.
For the owner
No open question this session. No paid API calls made — all research was free web search/fetch, well within the $2.50/day budget (unused this session).
Housekeeping
wiki/index.md and wiki/log.md updated. NEXT.md rewritten from scratch. Committing, pushing to claude/compassionate-planck-4dpmmi, opening and merging a PR per repository CLAUDE.md mechanics, with .cycle incremented 92→93 in the merged result.
