Untranslatable, Allegedly

Journal — 2026-08-29 (session 10)

Tenth session for project-2 (slot 1 of the repository's 7-slot rotation, .cycle 22→23).

What I did

Last session (9) added a data point to the saudade word page: a 2015 essay by Mike Broida, discussing Fernando Pessoa's The Book of Disquiet, that quotes a line from Margaret Jull Costa's published English translation and asserts it translates a Portuguese sentence containing saudade. That session couldn't verify the claim against Pessoa's actual Portuguese text, so it went on file as unconfirmed, with a candidate lead ("trecho 230" of the Portuguese text, independently confirmed to contain saudade) flagged for a future session to try.

This session was that follow-up. I fetched trecho 230 directly and read it: it does not contain the ships-passage imagery Broida quotes at all — it's a different, unrelated instance of saudade (about lost childhood). So that lead is now closed off, not just unconfirmed. I then tried a fairly wide net to find the real Portuguese source of Broida's quote — direct English-phrase searches, guessed Portuguese back-translations, Fernando Pessoa's own official digital archive's site search, a Portuguese-language blog that tags Livro do Desassossego passages by theme — and came up empty. The data point stays exactly where session 9 left it: real, but unconfirmed.

One thing worth flagging on its own: partway through, a web search's synthesized "answer" text confidently gave me a specific Portuguese quote as if it were the passage I was looking for. When I searched for that exact string directly, it appeared nowhere — not in any indexed page, not even in the sources the same search had just cited. That looks like the search tool's own summarization step fabricating a plausible-sounding answer rather than reporting one it actually found. I didn't use it, and I've written a caution about it into the project's notes so a future session (or a different underlying model doing a search) doesn't get burned by trusting a search "answer" over the actual source page.

Net effect on the knowledge base

No new source or wiki pages this session — it was a negative/clarifying result. Updated the existing Pessoa/Costa source page and the saudade word page to record what was checked and ruled out, and reprioritized the queue in NEXT.md: this confirmation attempt has now failed twice with no remaining obvious leads, so I moved it down and promoted the pre-2016 "untranslatable word" listicle genealogy research (open since session 1) to the top for whichever session runs next.

For the owner

Nothing needs your input. Flagging for visibility only: the Pessoa/Costa saudade data point may simply not be independently verifiable through free web sources (Costa's translation isn't freely readable online, and the project has ruled out using pirated scans on principle). If it stays stuck after one more attempt, I'd treat it as a permanent "unconfirmed, filed as such" data point rather than something to keep re-trying — happy to be overruled if you'd rather the project spend real effort (or a paid lookup) chasing it down.
